Unfortunately for me personally I don't see any great advantage to moving to 5G at the moment, anyway...maybe if I needed that much speed and the coverage matched existing networks, but it doesn't (at this stage) and I have a reasonably good experience as it is on the existing 4G network.

I think I'll wait for 5G to be rolled out fully (or at least a little bit more) and revisit it then.

Looks like it’s just an early phone that partially works. Every vendor does it to be first to market, but it’s compromised and not looking really useful.

We think the software doesn't "know" about 5G.

@sbiddle is all about rooting this phone and installing some other software but it is not my phone, so...

coffeebaron: G-MoN Pro showing 4G band when phone thinks it's in 5G.

It's nsa 5g. Pcell will be lte with a secondary carrier of 5g.

In apps there isn't really a great way to tell. Take speedtest.net for exqmple. They just assume lte with ca =5g on some networks...

If you wanna check it out without rooting, most Samsung have a pretty detailed fieldtest mode.

Oh, there also isn't really an official way to indicate 5g in android too and even when we get to that stage it will still heavily depend on how well vendor implent the default calls.

Yes, it was unscientific. We were having a coffee and decided to test. But you don't ask John Doe on the street to perform speed tests only under ideal conditions, do you?

No but it's more the way it blows up on the likes of twitter, creates a perception that certain groups would latch onto as evidence as to why it's not needed.

In reality I just want a geeky play with it really though but am too cheap to buy a flagship device that has such limited bands ;)

I look at it slightly differently.
If you're making all this marketing noise about 5G and it's all just marketing spin... Then I get grumpy.

You know I was talking about the ones with shiny hats...

coffeebaron: G-MoN Pro showing 4G band when phone thinks it's in 5G.

5G NSA networks (like every production 5G network in the world right now) rely on 4G as well and utilise 4G for upload which is why every single story about 5G being a game changer is nothing but PR marketing spin. Until we have 5G SA networks in 2-3 years time none of the 5G business cases being pitched can ever actually exist - so Vodafone NZ 5G promo videos showing use cases such as NZ Police flying a drone with 5G are not a use of 5G because they still rely on 4G.

When Spark brag about all the uploaded data of the American's Cup boats with their trial network it's all over 4G.

I suspect G-MoN Pro like most other apps simply cant cope with the phone simultaneously being connected to 4G and 5G and can't determine this.

Network Signal Guru is the best network monitoring app but unfortunately this required a rooted phone and none of us have a rooted 5G device to test. If somebody does have one (such as a One Plus 7 5G) I'd love to get some testing done. With NSG you get cool data like this (not my image)

I don't have unlimited funds to drop on a One Plus 7 5G just to root it and run a few speed tests. The sharemarket is down and my investments are tanking! πŸ˜‚

Obviously you're not investing in the 5G market, your share price would be sky rocketing!
Bitcoin millionaires is so yesterday, I'm going to be a 5G billionaire! ... Then die from radiation :(

Ran some more tests today to make sure I was using the "true 5G" during tests. Results below:

Lambton Quay by Vodafone store (5G vs 4G, same Samsung A50, lots of foot traffic at lunch time):

The Terrace by the RNZ building (5G vs 4G, same Samsung A90 device):

4G only on The Terrace with Huawei P30 Pro:

Certainly looking forward to Low band 5G not gonna drop money on a S20 when my Note 9 still gets good speeds in my area (and spark has not launched 5G yet) 2k. At this point its a very "beta" product and i have mixed feeling about VF charging for 5G as i can see most consumers wanting to save the $10.

Gotta love the 5G gonna kill us protests. Why would your cell carrier want to kill their revenue stream?
