Eva888:

Elderly couple with HFC got a call from Sky who offered them broadband for $60. They rang me as got nervous thinking it was a scam call and didn’t go any further. Anyone else been contacted?

We have not heard from One NZ officially about the closure yet and wondering if it would be wise just to find another provider now or wait.

If you are happy now do nothing.

If/when they retire the network it won't be the next day. It'll probably be in 3/6/12 months time.

@Eva888 does this elderly couple have Sky? I bet it is not a scam and they were offered the 100/20 plan

Yes they do have Sky but they may not keep it in future as he has a terminal disease and wife won’t need it. If they drop Sky in future will they be allowed to keep the broadband portion if they go with the offer. It’s a tempting price. Want them to have something reliable with no more upheaval down the track. Luckily I pressured them to get the fibre installation when Chorus offered it.

I signed up with sky broadband a week ago and despite all their promises have still not got a internet connection even though I have a ONT in my house. If they (sky) do not connect me by this Tuesday morning Im going to cancel the contract. Dont go near them a complete and utter circus. Phone calls are never returned and staff don't seem to care.

@ajw thanks for the heads up. He’s a vulnerable subscriber so thats enough for me to tell them to forget Sky. The deal they have with One also has 5 mobile buddies they can call for free from their landline so once you add on landline to any package it adds up to almost what they pay now.

I use Kogan mobile as a landline which I should have used years ago.

@ajw I try to keep everything as simple and cheap as possible for them. Both are hopeless and panic and forget instructions. They refused a prepay mobile plan for years saying they didn’t use the mobile enough and were paying $1.50 per call. Finally convinced them to go with 2 degrees prepay at $8.

I put $30 on their plan and she calls me a couple weeks later that 2 degrees was sending texts that she didn’t have enough credit. Went over and checked the log. She had been calling international and it had chewed up all her remaining credit. I had given her my old iPhone and put all her contacts in there including the international ones so that she had them handy and not on scraps of paper. Used to have Skype. Her old Samsung was very unresponsive and she avoided it.

Then there’s the charging and battery life issues. Landlines have large precise buttons, long battery life, no fiddly chargers and easier for old, shakey hands to hold and dial, plus sound is stronger on landlines in speaker mode. This is why older people don’t like cell phones.

I’ve watched them poke at names on the screen and the angle is wrong or screen unresponsive or slips on to another screen and that’s when they are totally lost and can’t get back to the contact names. I was beside myself just getting her to touch a contact. She was holding her finger straight and screen was hitting the nail. I could go on for an hour about the hassles.

Then you have the diabetic ones with peripheral neuropathy, or finger joints that are bent from arthritis. Small screens are really difficult for some elderly.

I'm sure you might have just missed the affiliate links to Quic in our pages and the signatures of some users, my one included. But if you can do your own router configuration, I see no reason why select SKY for broadband.

Because I thought they were a good ISP after having dealings with them you come to the rapid conclusion they are clowns.

Has anyone got the offical word from One NZ that this is actually happening?

I've been looking at https://wificonnect.co.nz/fibre/ and their 500/100 at $79 looks favourable and comes with a fixed IP. Anyone got any intel on WifiConnect and if they're any good?

I am going to wait until OneNZ officially announce it.

They have a big pool of subscribers coming free they would be stupid not to fish from.

Lots of other providers will stat fishing as well when it becomes more public.

When it went from VF to OneNZ they gave us discounts to stay with them, I suspect they will do the same again.

Recently they upgraded my old VF modem (that big grey one) to a deco for free.

I suspect they will do the same from the cable to the fibre.

Its too soon to panic.
