Hi all

Our network design team have been keeping an eye on this discussion and passing details on to me.

The first part of the current work on the cable network was completed on Monday. There is some optimisation to do still, but the initial results are looking good – the team will continue monitoring.

In addition, there are a few individual local cable nodes that need further capacity added. The plan is being tested and we aim to commence the individual node upgrades in the next 1-2 weeks.

Our team have been prioritising work to get the best outcome and as quickly as possible. I'll keep working to pass on more information regularly when plans are confirmed.

I personally know and trust the people looking after this work and know they want the best for our customers and network.

Dylan

Thanks for the update Dylan, it's appreciated.  Are you able to tell us which individual nodes need additional capacity?

Miramar - WKM Node, here's hoping mine is one of the nodes that needs additional capacity ;)

Yep, my connection blows again tonight. Around 20Mbps. Plus I'm having weird issues with images loading from Google services. Nothing from https://lh3.googleusercontent.com is loading and hasn't been since late last night. All I get are connection timeouts. It's definitely vodafone, if I switch to mobile it works fine.

I'm going to sign up for VDSL tomorrow and give it a try for a month or two. I have better things to do with my time than chase issues with an ISP who clearly don't give a crap, present company excluded. There's no excuse at this point.

Actually, looks like the google content issue was a router/DNS issue at my end.

Island Bay, node WKH, 100/10 cable

TrueNet - hourly stats for the past week:

Wellington:

Auckland: (relevant because all international traffic goes through there)

These stats are averaged over the past 7 days - some nights were (much) worse, some were better.

That pretty much matches my experience.

And word Dylan? And are there any plans to directly address the issues in Island bay or are Vodafone just hoping fixes elsewhere will resolve it? Because as far as I can tell there has been no work in Island bay at all since the node upgrade, which was five months ago. I know you're saying 1 - 2 weeks but you're vague about the areas this work is actually targeting. And with respect, I've been hearing that for months, the last time being mid January.

I've asked around for more detail. Of course the more recent work would have also helped Island Bay but appreciate you guys are still seeing issues like you've described.

My connection last night was...interesting.

Bandwidth remained relatively high throughout the night, but I had some latency issues and more CDN connectivity problems. I had basically the same problem that ramboky described, although I'm on Vodafone DNS. There were images on YouTube that simply would not load at all.

But that's likely an issue that extends beyond just Island Bay. Still hoping for some measurable, consistent improvements. The connection's performance is painfully unpredictable. One night it's fine, then the next it's barely usable.

Fingers crossed that the upcoming work goes smoothly and finally sorts things out.

+1  That's what I find most frustrating - one night cable appears to be fixed, the next night performance fluctuates wildly, literally from minute to minute.

I can remember the Telstra Clear era when cable was a totally reliable service, 24/7.

Thanks mate. As always, any frustration is not directed at you and your responses are appreciated around here. It's just hard to fathom how Vodafone are still struggling with getting their network to cope with existing users after all these months, while busily signing up new subscribers and being less than honest about it in the process.

Yes - and its a short sighted 'strategy' (if one can call it that).  The moment UFB is in Wellington, VF is toast
