To get similair airtime usage and data in NZ (depending on a lot of variables such as number of calls etc you'd be looking somewhere around NZ$150 - $200 based upon our current Vodafone pricing.

They just don't know how lucky they are..

I just looked on Vodafone's site and you can get a Talk 150 plan with 3GB data for $130. Not too shabby.

Do you mean a You Choose 120 @ $59.95, plus a no-term Broadband Pro @ $79.95? = $139.90...

Standard VFNZ offering, has been out for many months now... Unsure what a Talk150 plan is though, weren't the 'talk' plans legacy TNZ?

It's a You Choose Base 150 plan - 150 mins peak + 150 mins offpeak for $59.95

I don't believe you can add any data plans to a Base plan however (unless things have changed recently)..

I wasn't aware you could couple a Broadband Pro with a Base plan either... Since the BB Pro, when coupled with a standard You Choose, is technically an "add-on" then doesnt the following apply? "Customers on You Choose Base plans are not eligible for Vodafone specials or promotions or You Choose Add-ons"

You can't choose 3G broadband as a add-on on the You Choose plan selector, so I don't think so. 3G broadband should be a separate product.

Well... Looks like i'm in the market for a 1st Gen iphone, I can't afford a plan where I have to pay for stuff I don't use!

Anyone know why they aren't offering them as prepay?

"During the announcement of the new iPhone 3G at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference yesterday Steve Jobs touted affordability as one of the main improvements over the previous iPhone, citing that 56% of people considering purchasing the original iPhone said it was too expensive.

When Jobs announced the new version of the iPhone would sell for $199 USD he asserted "At just $199 we think the iPhone 3G is going to be affordable for just about everyone"

Not quite.

As more details have emerged about the terms of that price and the available iPhone service plans, it's clear Jobs claim was somewhat deceptive. While the price of the new iPhone 3G is $200 cheaper up front than a previous 8GB iPhone, that doesn't figure in the cost of a service plan required to use it. Unlike the previous iPhone, the $199 price is entirely dependent on signing a 2yr service agreement with AT&T. In other words, like most new phones, the price is subsidized.

Because of the move to the faster 3G network the monthly data plan required to use an iPhone actually increased $10 over the older EDGE data plan. The monthly plans for an iPhone 3G now start at $69.99/month ($30-data, $39.99-voice). Additionally the 200 text messages a month that use to be part of the EDGE data plan are now gone. Add those back in, and you'll need to tack on another $5 to your monthly bill or $20 for unlimited texting.

Total cost of ownership for the old 8GB iPhone: $399 (phone) + $1439 (2yr plan @ 59.99/month) = $1838.76

Total cost of ownership for the new 8GB iPhone 3G: $199 (phone) + $1679.76 (2yr plan @ 69.99/month) = $ 1878.76

More affordable? Actually it will cost you an extra $40 over the life of the two year required contract, or $160 more if you plan on doing any text messaging.

I'm not necessarily saying $40 more over a two year period isn't worth it for the added features and faster service you get with the iPhone 3G, though it is an incredible amount of money to spend on wireless service when you look at the total cost. But their marketing ploy calling the iPhone "half the price" and Jobs directly stating its more affordable now for the 56% of consumers who said it wasn't before is false and misleading. Anyone who couldn't afford the previous iPhone will be even worse off buying an iPhone 3G.

I'm only describing the current USA/AT&T situation. Customers in the UK and elsewhere in the world may actually come out ahead with the new phone pricing. In the UK for instance, the old 8GB iPhone cost 269 pounds, while the iPhone 3G will now be just 99."

I'm sorry but I do have to laugh at this article.

The guy correctly points out that over 2 years, if you want the 3G iPhone you will have to pay an extra $40.

$40!!! But that's ridiculous! I'm only getting an increase in speed from 56k to 3.2Mb. Since when should we have to pay extra for new features????

I don't know about you guys but I would gladly pay 40 measly dollars over 2 years for HSDPA speeds over dial up on my phone. In fact, if we compare prices for equivalent at home computer internet speeds; it costs about $15 at most places for unlimited dial up but for unlimited broadband we're looking at about $600. In fact, for $40 extra over 2 years (That's about $1.60 extra a month) we can't even afford broadband!

Many of you might rightly point out that this guy does admit that $40 is probably worth it but I just don’t understand his logic.

When A is said to be more affordable than B what I hear is if I buy A over B, I will end up with the same thing but I will have money left over. What this guy fails to see is that A and B have to be roughly the same. Like for example, Anchor milk vs. Any other brand of milk. The other brand is said to be more affordable because they are the same product but the other brand is cheaper. You wouldn’t go around telling off Primo because their bottle of strawberry milk is not as affordable as Anchor’s milk would you? Or the raw price of a handset; 2.5G iPhone: $399 vs. 3G iPhone: $199. If I used those 2 devices on a 2.5G network they’d be exactly the same and so, like Steve Jobs said, the 3G iPhone itself is more affordable. However, if I want a place for me on the 3G network instead I will have to pay for that and so I do.

When he compares the plans like that it’s like comparing milk with strawberry milk. With dial up speeds, I wouldn’t even call the 2.5G iPhone plan ‘real’ internet as it is effectively useless for anything other than text emails. If you want to visit a modern website you’d better get comfortable as you’ll be waiting your butt off (And I might point out that that large screen is perfectly designed for flash, image-laden websites). You’re actually paying $240 over 2 years for broadband. And that’s not bad! An extra $10 a month for broadband over dialup: that’s dam good value.

Basically at the end of the day, ‘affordability’ doesn’t even come into it. If you want internet on your iPhone you get the 3G version. Yes it’s going to cost you more in the long run but of course it will; you’re getting more out of it.

Thats not the point. He qouted in his speech that the iPhone would now be cheaper, It isn't.

Does it matter that it wont be offered on Prepay? They should still work if you get them overseas as the 3g arent going to be sim locked (according to the herald..?).

tosh computers $530 for 16GB inc delivery and 1 yr warranty. I think its a good deal.

I reckon Voda will release the phone on postpay first to get as many early adopters to "sign a 24month contract" and then at some stage later will release it on prepay to capture the remaining market, its probably why they removed the "available on prepay" from the press release on their website.

As to whether it's cheaper or not really depends on how you interpret what he said. The up front cost is cheaper than the old model.

As for using it on prepay there probably won't be anything to stop you except for $10 per MB for data. Considering that the internet capabilities of the iPhone are one big selling points of this phone that may leave you with a big whole in your wallet unless Vodafone launch their new plans before then.

If a product was not previously offered in our market how could it be deemed to be more expensive (or cheaper).

Good point raised. Also to consider in the total cost of ownership any fees if you need to break a current contract to change plan etc.

From the keynote it did not mention TCO, just the initial acquisition cost for handset eg $199USD.

O really Stuff? AFAIK 1800MHz transmitters are GSM/GPRS not UMTS/HSDPA!

They did however say:

Vodafone New Zealand spokeswoman Alison Sykora says that the iPhone will only be available to customers on account.
