So is anyone keeping tabs of how many times this thing has been delayed?

StarBlazer:
What's the point reviewing something that is in alpha test?  Why is it even in the shop?  TCL should have kept quiet until they were actually ready to release a product - no adverts, no mail-outs and no 'register your interest' campaign.  Now they are having to deal with a social media backlash - incompetence if you ask me!

Apple have sold 1m+ iPad units in less than a month - all that design, testing and manufacturing happened in the quiet - they launch with a near perfect unit - I'm not an iFanboi, but you have to congratulate them for a job well done.  TCL are showing us they have little to no real R&D, rubbish PR and that they don't care we get to hear about every delay in bringing the product to market.

Did Sky have the same problems - possibly - but did we hear about them?  Not that I remember.  Yes it's better to get the product right rather than releasing a product that keeps breaking down or needs to be patched weekly - but this is pointless and not helping their reputation.

Well as far as I can tell, they've been doing this constantly since Alan Freeth became CEO. The reason is obviously to get people to stay in anticipation of X being released "soon". Why release a competitive product or service early in the game when you can drag out the introduction for months or years, while keeping all your customers from leaving?

Nah wouldn't - it was more of a cheap shot across the bow of TCL

I would guess similar to the number of pages on this thread .  Sorry couldn't resist a little trolling!

The MySky (both Mk1 and HDi) are based on a common firmware platform used by SkyUK, Foxtel and others with minor mods for SkyNZ, it had been well tested and in service in other markets before it got here, even then there have been a few niggles probably more overall system integration of the box and back end in our market rather than outright box firmware issues, I dont think TCL will have the luxury of delivering a well tried (or relatively well tried) product as Sky has.

So unless you are up for bleeding edge firmware issues I suggest you pickup the phone and dial 0800 759759 .......... and no I wasn't paid to place this advertorial, its just the MySky works, and works very well, and is here now, has been for 2yrs or so.

Actually, I'd say that's seriously about right.

You're absolutely right Cyril, problem is I don't want to pay for installation twice - switching to Sky now and the switching back to TCL after 12 months when their killer PVR is released.  Worried that they may also offer a killer deal with the release - FOMO strikes again!

I was in the UK and a Sky subscriber when MySky was released - if there were any glitches, they kept them under wraps.

You can get free installation of MySky HDi through Harvey Norman: http://www.harveynorman.co.nz/deals-and-events/my-sky-hdi Only downside is that you have to sign up for a 12 month contract. Standard MySky HDi installation is $99 but there's no minimum contract.

Let's be honest, it's not very likely that we're going to get this within the 12 month stage anyway, so it'll be a good idea to do the 12 month contract with free installation :)

MySky also has features that the TCL box doesn't and vice versa. It's a matter of weighting up the pros and cons at the end of the day and deciding what one suits you better.

(And no I'm not going to say any more about what the pros and cons are so don't ask. You'll find out when the box is released!)

Got a good price from the tele-marketing arm of Sky - $49 install, half price sport and movies $43.50/month, no charge for the MySky HDi ($15/month normally) and no charge for HD Ticket ($15/month normally) for 6 months and then on to whatever package you decide to keep for the remaining 6 months of the 12 month contract - minimum is about $48 plus $15 for HDi box.  If I stay TCL it currently costs about $34/month and then $15 extra a month for HDPVR plus $99 installation.

Not sure it's still available but if you want to try phone Sky and tell them about the deal and they will get the tele marketing to call you back.  When I put it like that - don't know why I'm even waiting!
