I've had traffic issues when I had 20gb just recently gone upto 40gb. TC would be loving it. I could'nt work out the traffic spike. I had 40gb & was using less that 20gb so i downgraded & was like that for about 3 months then spiked again so went 40gb again.
Anyway I use a program running in taskbar call Traffic Usage Checker found at www.tuc.co.nz
Excellent program which shows how much used & if your in traffic limit for your plan till it resets.
I recommend this program as it logs into your account to get the info than going into telstras website.

I've used that program for a long time too. It shows exactly the same information (you total usage) as on the TelstraClear website, just presented differently, so it won't help to get you data that is any more accurate. It is much more convenient though.

Yes, that's correct. The Firefox add-on (there's a beta version for Chrome too) that Gary suggested (http://netusage.iau5.com/) also provides easier access to the TC data. I have installed both Firefox and Chrome versions and they seem to work very well.
However, if you want to independently meter the traffic on your computer you need to install different software. I used versions of NetLimiter (http://www.netlimiter.com/) to collect the data that I posted earlier in this discussion. However, the more recent versions are free only for a trail period. I have now found some freeware that I like better, called Networx (http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/).
Update: J that was a very interesting link. I rang them and spent half a hour talking about the issues and got quite a lesson about who the whole processes with measuring things works (going back to the dark ages) which was very interesting and helpful.
MSL regard them selves as the top of a pyramid in the measurement process which then filters down though a range of government agencies.
At present they don't have any resources for measuring 1's and 0's, but the guy I talked to did seem to agree that there is a growing need and it is relevant for a range of reasons that we talked about in brief. He's was aware of the issues as, interestingly, he has staff who are having the same issues with TelstraClear that we've been having. So he's going to raise it with his boss.
My feeling, given the value of the market place and the importance of the issue pushing forward, that a $5 to $10 million dollar investment is needed, in stages, to build up the resource needed. MSL's initial though was they'd need at least half a million in the first year for 2 staff, though given the cost of the kind of resources they'd need, I suspect that it light by at least 200% and they should start with $1.5 million.
MED and ComCom will also need some resource to play their part in this space as well as it strikes me that they don't have the required resource either to develop effective policy in the required areas.
So in all I would see this being not as big a project as I originally thought and only costing between $15 and $20 million to sort out over 3 to 5 years.

Really the credit has to go to BiDi who has championed the issues in the first instance. I confess I simply watched the topic for over a week just to see where it might go.
BiDi has done a truck load of work in generating those graphs. (And as I am head down in 200,000 rows of usage data in just 1.5 days, I can assure you that the work BiDi has done is massive and extremely time consuming!).
UPDATE: The people at MSL were very helpful and extremely professional and did get back to me very promptly and again, my thanks to the person who posted that link.
In summary, MSL seem to have a number of concerns with stepping into this area. They measure physical stuff, are very good at it and have a reputation to up hold.
They do not have any resources in this area currently and I got the impression that they do understand how complex it is and don't want to take on such a task on a whim to then be chewed up and spat out by an angry industry (no, they did not say that, that is my personal interpretation of what they did say, which I did not record and can't recount word for word).
I view this as extremely positive stuff. It means that we don't end up with another exercise like www.telme.org.nz (and may of us know just how well that panned out so far - not!).
I made the observation that direction really needs to come from the minister (or ministers) with well founded resources provided over an sensible time frame to develop the right resources to do the job properly. A comment that they did not disagree with.
They did ask if I was aware of any other country engaging in such measurement. I commented that I don't know (and if anyone does then please speak up - on or off line).
I commented that this is an area that New Zealand could and should take a lead on given that our data is 16 times more expensive than our closest neighbor (Australia). I also commented that we're heading into a world of more metering and not less, you only have to look at what's happening in the US and Australia to understand that. Again, I did not get any disagreement.
A comment they did make is that while this issue did not come under the MSL blanket directly, they would raise the issue around IRL to consider their involvement and committed to getting back to me if there was interest.
Following my second conversation with MSL, I was very much left with a feeling that these are the kind of guys that should be taking the lead roll in this process.
This is very much industrial research and needs a team behind it that has the world view skills to deliver what New Zealand needs as well as knowing how to generate the capital value to sell the resource in the global market.
My fear is that if this task was simply handed to an agency like ComCom, they would not have the skill set to do much more than realise some moderation in the .nz space.
