I'm only getting ~750 Kbps bitrate on YouTube right now, which is far worse than a speed test would indicate. I've had pretty much every major issue rolled into one today: Horrible peak hour speeds; significantly elevated latency; and awful performance when connecting to various CDNs.

Here's how things are looking now:

Ah, yes, totally comparable to UFB.

Dairyxox: Even when the cable "numbers" are better than the ADSL, things like YouTube might still be functionally better on the ADSL due to Vodafone's naff routing to CDNs. Can you confirm?

Yea cable is sketchy as always has been. Sometime you click a link and wait and wait... its easier to close the browser and request the link again facebook and any website outside of NZ will suffer from this. The funny thing is if i use a VPN to Aussie everything just work and i still get 100/10 to Sydney just 30ms slower.

Good grief!  It's only 6.30pm and the rot has already set in.  frown

My connection has been unusable since at mid afternoon, possibly earlier. Pretty happy to have a backup right now.

And then gone again. Speed test, while it was actually working, was giving a far better result than real world tests would suggest.

I can relate to that.

Positive speed test results tonight, yet YouTube performance is atrocious.

I normally see the same thing... its quite common for me to get 125mb/s on vodafone's speedtest server while getting 1/2 (or less) that on actual throughput

Vodafone's High Speed cable offering vs 2degrees ADSL2:

What an embarrassment. I should get a date on the VDSL upgrade tomorrow, will let you folks know how it goes.

Hi @ramboky

Wondering if you can share any more of an update on VDSL? We're moving to Island Bay in a week (to the dreaded WKH, from the relative comfort of WKF). I've already booked the tech for the cable move, but now am wondering if I've made the wrong call and should just try and get VDSL installed from the start. I've google map measured the distance from our new place to the Island Bay exchange and its about ~800 meters depending on which streets the copper actually runs in. There aren't any cabinets for miles so I'm guessing we'd be Cabinet-fed. Chorus' website doesn't have any information about our new address (I think it's already on cable), but the neighbours seem to be able to get "up to" 50 Mbps.

@mdf Chorus also lists my address as up to 50Mbps, unfortunately until the VDSL upgrade I can't give you an answer on what speeds the line is really capable of. At this point I'm just waiting on the port upgrade. It's out of 2degrees' hands but they said it's usually between 5 and 15 business days.

My ADSL experience so far has been a solid 13Mbps, no matter the time of day with none of the weird routing issues the cable network is well known for. Latency is also generally better, though I've only checked to New Zealand servers so far. It's also $15 cheaper than my cable connection. All in all, if I can get 25Mbps+ from VDSL I'll ditch cable in a heartbeat. The greater off peak speed increase of cable just is pretty worthless, particularly when it comes with constant unreliability.

I hope you haven't signed up for a fixed term contract with Vodafone...

Cancel cable, get xDSL, and wait.

I live in the same street as @ramboky.

I have the misfortune to be on cable, on node WKH. It sucks. Just read the last 158 pages.

I am 900m from the Island Bay Exchange. Tried VDSL - got less than 15/5Mbps and gave up.

No fibre in Island Bay until December 2019.

At the moment I'm tolerating cable (with difficulty) - I use cable in the mornings, and try to avoid using it in the evening, because performance is poor and totally unpredictable.

Yes, I get "up to" line speed off-peak, but only a small fraction of that in the evenings.

Cancel cable, get xDSL, and wait.

Ugh. We changed plans in June last year. I didn't (knowingly) sign up to any kind of fixed term contract then, but I am sure that the outcome of that discussion will be entirely dependent on who you actually talk to on the day.

FWIW:

But real world is worse than this. No youtubes for me at all.

@Sideface as of april 28 chorus are offically extending the range of VDSL. Also when you were on VDSL was it before the upgrade to 998 band plan? you might get better results now with the new band plan

Thats pretty bad for VDSL... i was on the very edge of what they were allowing the installation into and still managed 21/5 when i was in Karori
