You'd think Vodafone would be far better off getting the leaches who are using the vast majority of the data off the HFC network. Based upon data I've seen moving a few hundred high use customers to VDSL2 or UFB would do wonders for the entire HFC network as a temporary fix. Even better I've sure Vodafone have rules in their T&C about impacting other users - Vodafone would be better off simply telling these people they're not welcome as customers and send them on their merry way with a $250 payout.

Except Vodafone currently have a policy of not connecting anyone to fibre where HFC is available. I kind of understand the business rationale (no cut to Chorus), but when you've got capacity issues wouldn't it be great to offload some people?

I know it's not policy but when the network can't cope it's a quick fix.

There is a reason the US moved away from unlimited plans many years ago, because their cable networks couldn't cope. Why Vodafone thought things would be any different...

Agree totally with this. We're on unlimited here, because 80GB wasn't quite enough, but the options are 80 or unlimited. I think something like 150 would be heaps. I'd take a cut to 150 quite willingly if everyone else had to as well. When you don't put a price on something you get all sorts of irrational behaviour.

The US has not "moved away from unlimited many years ago", many providers (especially smaller local ones) still offer unlimited, and Comcast is still 'rolling out' the 300GB cap across their network.

It looks like a decent proportion of Wellington has fibre available now, according to https://broadbandmap.nz/

Be sure to keep an eye on your address so you can get out of the cable purgatory ASAP!

I'm trying to find the source from a report last year but the total number of US internet users with data caps is somewhere in the vicinity of 70% - it's certainly the majority, not minority.

Perhaps elaborate on who you are and why you're monitoring Mr H?

Lots of people really waiting for a good story here...

I manage Digital Service for Big Red, so keen to hear what the issues are and escalate/deal with them as much as possible. Manage the Vodafone Community as well.

Hi Mike - welcome to this particular sub-forum! I've always appreciated the huge amount of help the likes of @johnr and @dylanp (when he was still VodafoneDylan) have contributed to Geekzone. That said, there are some real issues (and a thoroughly over-it customer base) on the cable network at the moment as detailed in this thread, so it can get a bit robust. Hope to keep you around.

Thanks for the message - yes I hope to be the bearer of good news and I certainly don't mind being the hod carrier of issues into the business from this Forum.

I propose that the name of this thread be changed to "The festering sore that is the cable purgatory thread".

The other options may not be very good but I wish people would take them instead of remaining in cable purgatory and continuing this thread. Reading it is like purgatory because nothing changes and there is lots of moaning and gnashing of teeth. If that was me I would have switched ISPs anyway which is consistent with the initial arc of this thread (emphasis is mine):

gbwelly: Things are getting absurd with cable performance. It's a comedy how it's being handled in terms of communication. The congestion issues seem to be spreading and the uptake of Netflix etc. is just starting. I'm getting close to the point of taking my money elsewhere if thing don't improve soon and drastically.

Hey MikeHales, good to see a rep on here communicating.  I can tell you the one thing that I need from Vodafone... information!  The cable network issues have obviously been going on a long time and Vodafone has invested in upgrades that have alleviated the issues for the most part, for a good portion of the network.  As someone who's on a part of the network that is still suffering extremely poor performance (Wainuiomata), it would go miles towards keeping me happy to just get something in the way of information about what's happening in the future, that isn't completely vague.

It's good to know that significant upgrade work is going to happen in the future, there are just two things I need to know:

- Is it going to remedy the issues I'm facing?

- When is it scheduled to happen?

- (Bonus question) Are the nodes currently affected the worst going to have highest priority getting upgraded?

I assume the answer to the first question is yes, but the answer to the second question is the big question mark that frustrates me so much as a customer (and that it hasn't been communicated for such a long time).  "The next few months" is too vague, day by day schedule is unnecessary, but somewhere in the middle would be great.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

They actually seem to be doing the opposite... UFB is just being installed in my area, and we received a letter from Vodafone offering us a "special offer" of unlimited cable (50Mbps) plus phone line for $69.99 per month, locked in for 24 months.

They are targeting people who are on the cusp of being able to sign up for UFB. That makes sense from one perspective, but it's a bit poor to be trying to pile more people on unlimited plans onto an already overloaded network.

This thread is what has stopped me from signing up to cable for the last year or so.
