froob:

They actually seem to be doing the opposite... UFB is just being installed in my area, and we received a letter from Vodafone offering us a "special offer" of unlimited cable (50Mbps) plus phone line for $69.99 per month, locked in for 24 months.

They are targeting people who are on the cusp of being able to sign up for UFB. That makes sense from one perspective, but it's a bit poor to be trying to pile more people on unlimited plans onto an already overloaded network.

This thread is what has stopped me from signing up to cable for the last year or so.

Did they pretend in the letter that it was UFB you would be getting and not cable? Friend of a friend fell for that false advertising letter carryon and cancelled the install just in time.

To their credit, no. It was referred to as "Cable Broadband" or "Ultra Fast Cable". No doubt there are still people who wouldn't know the difference, but it wasn't misleading.

I'm still waiting for a visit from them trying to sign me up to fibre with them. I got a flyer in the mail not that long ago, so I guess a door-to-door visit can't be too far away.

I would call ultra fast cable to be misleading in the context of other offers arriving due to the installation of fiber offering ultra fast internet etc.

Its just nasty of vodafone preying on peoples ignorance to peddle the vastly inferior product and have people go thru all the hassles only to have to do it again on the right product.

richms, I think that you'd be much better just stating the facts like froob did. The situation doesn't need an injection of highly emotive and pejorative statements that just show you have an axe to grind.

There can be confusion without Vodafone engaging in "false advertising" or to "pretend" anything like what you claim.

Ultra fast cable is not a "vastly inferior product". Many people won't be able to tell the difference. I realise that there are problems in some areas but that's not all users.

As to arguments over terminology, this always happens when competing groups want to gain control over the mindset of consumers. I would argue that the terms "Ultra Fast Broadband" or "ultra fast Internet" should not be able to be appropriated by one group over another. But that is the competitive landscape here, and that's why I don't see why Vodafone should be denied marketing techniques available to others.

I've been having a few latency issues this week  undecided

Here are my TrueNet latency stats for the past 4 weeks:

Right now (4.30pm) in sunny Island Bay:

nPerf Auckland server

Island Bay. 5 pm. What the absolute !@#$, Vodafone.

Here is a Wainuiomata @ 6pm to go with it

The latency is not as good as the test would imply either.

Test with nPerf, which gives more detailed and accurate latency and speed stats  wink

nPerf appears to run off a server at MyRepublic, been using the Vodafone WLG speedtest server as its the shortest distance away network wise

The Vodafone Wellington speedtest is just OOKLA Wellington minus latency stats - that's why I prefer the nPerf / My Republic Auckland server:

Note that this gives you average latency and speeds (small print) as well as best latency and speeds (large print).

An Auckland server is very relevant to Wellington in that our international traffic goes through Auckland (I used to live near the Southern Cross cable landfall at Takapuna smile)

Right, yeah the latency of the nPerf test is more relevant and comprehensive indeed:

Well I have the Chorus folks (Downer) surveying all the streets around me but apparently not mine since it's a cul de sac just off one of the streets they are preparing and apparently they won't be coming down my street for another 12 months :-(

Annoying but not a huge deal since I have been lucky with my speeds which while not ever reaching the targeted 130Mbs using the local server, rarely drop below 90Mbs.

Anybody know the timetable for DOCSIS 3.1 around here?

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Purportedly June/July. Though given the source and the failure of the Wellington upgrades, I'd take that with a massive grain of salt.
