Visual Voicemail does take some integration, and doing so with Vodafone's Asia Pacific's (well, Aus and NZ for now) bespoke systems will take a little while.

I was referring to the handbag :P

As for Trademe, why are they doing this? The iPhone was available at retail price with no contract in at least one european country for a period of time, so there's no legitimate reason for them to stop the sale. Another case of Fairfax intervention I see. Not surprising to see another thing they touch turn to custard.

Trademe had no right to do this as there are lots of things on sale on Trademe which aren't available in NZ. I complained to them about it and received a generic response - and when I questioned this I got no further response from them. Specifically I pointed out how the Nokia N82 wasn't available in NZ but there were lots for sale on Trademe at the time. I think there has to be some deeper reasons (Apple intervention?) behind the scenes as it didn't make sense.

Well considering the launch date IS ALREADY July 11th, why would any vodafone outlet want to lose sales and go against ALL the PR stating July 11th is the Launch date.

What on earth are Apple thinking?

Vodafone are investing millions in their 900Mhz - UMTS Rural Network Nationally & Internationally & yes I realise other phones do support this UMTS frequency, but I can't understand why Apple did not add this in the first place, to what appears to be largely a VERY cool/high tech piece of kit.

Can anyone confirm if there is any chance that the chip can be upgraded to support 900Mhz UMTS? It is probably/more than likely a long shot, but man, what a very short sighted view on Apple's behalf, I must say.

They were thinking NZ, Australia, and stuff all else use 900MHz, while the rest of the world use 850, is what they were thinking.

Considering that 900Mhz UMTS is being deployed to other countries around the world, I think this is a very short sighted view of behalf of Apple. 900Mhz UMTS will be VERY common worldwide within the 6-12 months IMHO.

The next incarnation of this phone will probably support 900Mhz UMTS, but we will have to wait for 2 years plus for that, what a shame.

Yes it will be deployed more but its not there now!! Apple can worry about it on there next iphone 3G if they want!!

Most (if not all) carriers that are deploying 900MHz UMTS already have existing 2100MHz networks that cover the major population areas, so I don't think it's a problem. Apple have done a Vodafone and is 'making the most of now'.

Rogers, in Canada, are the latest telco to annouce their voice and data plans for the iPhone - and customers aren't happy! Angry customers have set up the RuinedIphone.com website and have already collected over 12000 signatures in a petition to complain to Rogers.

In saying that, the Rogers plans look pretty good value compared to what's on offer in NZ- here's what you get for CAD100 (NZD130)

600 minutes peak calls
Unlimited offpeak calls
200 texts
1GB data
Unlimited use of Rogers's WiFi hotspots

The closest you can get to this plan on VFNZ is to get the Choose 600 + 200 Texts + 1GB mobile broadband, at almost $300. And you still don't get the unlimited offpeak calls or access to WiFi hotspots. The big downside to the Rogers plan is the 3 year contract you have to take out - that's ridiculous by any standards.

In contrast, O2 in the UK offer an 18 month contract and you can get a free 8GB or 16GB iPhone with 3000 minutes, 500 texts, and unlimited data and Wifi, for just GBP75 per month. Or you can get a free 8GB iPhone on the GBP45 per month plan that has 1200 minutes, and the same free texts, unlimited data, unlimited Wifi.

So what will VFNZ offer in the way of iPhone plans...? We'll have to wait and see, but perhaps it will be Vodafone customers starting up the next petition on RuinedIphone.com

The reality is that with a US$199 pricepoint for a handset that is worth somewhere around US$500 based upon non contract pricing in Europe. Whatever way you look at it carriers worldwide somehow have to recoup subsidy costs that various media reports indicate are somewhere around the US$300 value - that's US$300 over a 24-36 month contract that needs to recovered before you can even make a single $ off the customer.

The iPhone never has been and never will be a cheap handset.

Yes - but not immediately. It'll probably be at least 18 months before we see any large scale 900MHz networks in Europe. EU licence regulations are specific to a certain technology so many carriers are only allowed to deploy GSM on 900MHz spectrum and require changes to their licence conditions to deploy UMTS. Due to the smaller amount of spectrum they also have with 3 or sometimes 4 900MHz GSM networks per country deploying both technologies will also be a nightmare. VFNZ were lucky having so much bandwidth that they can deploy both side by side, hence the network is very much a prototype network for the Vodafone Group.
