MichaelNZ:

Vodafone/One will turn off the HFC network and the residents who are not on UFB will complain like there is no tomorrow but few will be prepared to pay for it.

Aside from Pegasus, there are next-to-no places where cable is available that fibre isn't. The footprint of the two networks is quite close to 100% - barely anyone wanting fibre will have to "pay for it".

Unless they are in a multi unit place with an obstructive body corp, or have standards higher than the free installation that they get for free with regards to attaching to fences or slotting a driveway.

Ah yes - but fibre would still (usually) be available to a multi-storey address like that.

As for the fussy ones, they can still install their own conduit and place an order for fibre.

Elsewhere, if there is HFC there is almost certainly Fibre, but not in Pegasus, just as your image shows.

Check out Killalea place in Paraparaumu, there is HFC, chorus copper, but no fibre.

I wonder if that is just the case of One being a bit lazy with their HFC coverage map, as Killalea Place is rather rural. Because apparently they also HFC available across Kapiti Golf Club, the Waikanae Estuary Reserve, and the first 20m or so of ocean off the Waikanae Coast...

And there must be a stop sell on HFC because the only thing been offered at a random address on that street is xDSL and Wireless

Unless they already have a copper line they won't get VDSL because Chorus has a no new copper policy for around 3 years. This was introduced very quietly and I only found out about it when I tried to get a new VDSL connection for someone in 2023 I think it was.

Even if they have copper its still a red herring. Quote "or ideally sooner" from Chorus ASM a few days ago.

A quick measure and count on Google Maps indicate there are ~21 properties from the nearest UFB coverage to the end of Killalea Place. Based on a recent estimate I got from Chorus for a low density urban rollout they could be around $200k to cover this.

Assuming everyone pitches in that's a modest $9,500 each. A sum I would definitely recommend any of them to accept.

Unfortunately, the cold hard reality is even though sub-$10k is at the bottom end, there will invariably be people who don't want to contribute. They think its too much, they are getting Starlink anyway, Someone else* on the street should pay more so they can get it cheaper, or someone else got it free so this is their expectation. The later is the most reasonable because its what Chorus is telling everyone in their own marketing - they are pushing the 'free' angle.

*This actually happens. Usually aimed at someone perceived to be wealthy or a business.

To be fair, I am not an employee of Chorus and $200k is a stab in the dark. But whatever the number is, its not cheap.

So unless this road manages to be the exception to the usual fare for a Community Co-funded install they will likely end up on wireless. Or they may get lucky and be included in a future rollout if the stars are all in alignment.

There are a lot of these situations around the country and short of a UFB3 rollout we will probably continue to have these discussions.

Chorus published an industry informer on 21 June 2023 stating we would no longer offer quotes for building new copper network (or extending the copper network) from 19 July 2023. This informer is still accessible on the Chorus Partners website (formerly the SP site).

Reconnection of intact copper circuits outside of UFB fibre areas is still possible, either as a straight remote activation or with a truckroll for an exchange/cabinet jumper.

With copper withdrawal underway everywhere UFB fibre is available, we no longer allow intact copper activations in fibre areas except in extremely fringe circumstances - and even then, only on a temporary basis.

I think there's a lot of misinformation floating around, including ISPs either not understanding, or individual helpdesk staff not saying the right things. I know someone who had her active copper connection disconnected last week with no warning, although the impression I got from her description was that the ISP "decided" that copper was no longer available, rather than it being actual Chorus withdrawal. I shudder to think how many people throughout the country have run into similar issues.

If she was in a UFB area then there is likely going to be an active copper withdraw and letters and/or emails would be sent(of course this relies on the billing and email addresses being up to date), including flyers (from Chorus).

Frontline has access to any notes put on any account including the provisioning side and if any notifications have been sent or couldn't be sent.

I feel like I'm gonna need to sell a mug that says "This shouldn't be hard..." for how many times I've said this.

Chorus has been sending the industry a bunch of 'nudges' over the past few months. However, as things stand right now they have not received permission to exit copper DSL services but they are talking like its a done deal.

But this is probably a moot point because ISP's have gotten the message and are making their own decisions to exit. Some clients are choosing to exit themselves in favour of LEO.

So therefore my current personal advice is to plan for an environment where LEO and UFB are the main, or only, options.

This may mean some people have to pay if they want UFB. We had to. I know of others on GZ who did likewise. Such is life.

She'd still been getting bills, including a bill for the full month that she was disconnected partway through. Nothing from Chorus.
