So it looks like I'll be running the cable myself this weekend!
Got the local JA Russell guys to deliver the conduit this afternoon.

The telephone cable isn't a problem as it terminates in the ETP box on the side of the house, where I will run 3 CAT5e cables from back to the patch panel.
What's the best way to transition from the outdoor GEL filled data cable to internal cabling?
As I understand it you aren't allowed to go more than 5M into the house with the GEL filled stuff as it's a fire risk, is that correct?
My patch panel is going to be on the other side of the garage from where the cable will enter the house, which will probably be a run of no more than 10m.

Hi, why 3 cat5e runs, 2 is enough, I have found no compelling evidence from the TCF to support the need for three. One for data and one for voice should it be provided by the ONT, which currently is not a plan for any fibre provider, ie they will use VOIP on the main data feed, other than that the 2nd line can be used as backup.

Use scotch locs to connect leadin to the cat5e Russels will have them, if you need instructions on using them then yell out.

Forget the Gel 5m thing its a red herring, I work on the MoE (education cabling standards) commitee and the requirement to limit to 15m for Gel cables into buildings has been dropped, simply because there is no evidence for them being a fire risk, this is feedback from the international insurance community. Basically the energy required to light them is so high that other issues are a problem and further to that internationally there is no recorded insurance industry evidence for gel cables ever being the cause or helped propagate a fire.

That all said you should be stopping the Gel cable at the ETP.

Edit, and dont forget that all the RG6 that Sky put in your house is gel filled, no problems there

2 it is then from etp to patch panel :)
I've got a 100m roll of two pair telco cable to run from there to the road side.

So with the outdoor cat cable I should just run it straight to the patch panel?

Hi, sure you can run the 2pair hard jacket from the street to the panel, but where will the fibre terminate in future, that is where the cat5e should run to as that is where the transition from fibre to copper ethernet will happen.

Sorry I think I'm confusing everyone :)

I'm running a telephone cable from the street to the house and into an etp.
I'm also running two, possibly three, outdoor gel filled data cables from the house to a shed where there will be an office.
These runs will be in separate conduits but in the same trench.

From the etp I will run two data cables back to the patch panel.

I also want to know if it's ok to run the outdoor gel filled data cable from the shed all the way directly to the patch panel or if I need to terminate it somewhere on the house and then run normal data cables from there. From what cyril7 has said I'll be fine just running it directly to the patch panel.

Hi, gotya, as previous, yes dont get worried about gel filled cable in a building, its not a problem, even if others may say otherwise.

As mentioned every RG6 cable Sky puts in a house is gel flooded.

Oh right. Understood. Yea as per Cyril, run it straight it to the panel. And two runs should plenty. One for data and one for voice. Then have a little sub panel in the shed/office.
