Hey,

We are busy building our new house and want to know who is responsible, or who should I contact, in regards to getting the phone line cable run from the boundary to the house?

I thought I could just do it myself but my electrician said I should get it done by our phone provider because if anything goes wrong at a later date, with that cable, then they are responsible for it and any repair costs.
So I contacted TC, who we have our phone and broadband with at our current location, about 3 weeks ago and they didn't seem to know anything about this.
Anyway I've been passed around from department to department and emails have been going back and forth for those 3 weeks and today I got another saying I need to contact Chorus.
So I called Chorus and they told me to go back to TC, who I have emailed back again!

So anyone here know what I need to do?

The trench for the power and phone (& a couple of data runs I will do myself) is already open and waiting for the cables.
Is the cost of this cable and installation included in the $500 rural new connection fee?

Thanks!

Just ring up and ask for a new connection. When the tech comes around he will find he has to do more and will just do it. As long as you have a duct that meets the specifications all should be good. Put that in there with some pull wire and you can cover your trench back up.

It will likely be cheaper for you to put the conduit in the trench than Chorus I think. Not 100% sure though, your builder/property developer should know.

For reference here are the Chorus lead in documents/specs:

Hi, you mention TC, so are you in an HFC cable area or are they just your ISP that deliver by Chorus/Telecom wholesale.

Also why are you putting data in the trench, or is that to some other building or gate etc.

Yea data cables will be run to the shed that the trench runs right past.

The new house is in a rural area west of Whangarei so no cable or fibre available. :(
Just plain old ADSL, not even ADSL2.

OK, then there is no reason you cannot do it yourself the sparkie is being over cautions. Infact its now the norm the sparkie runs it. You wholesaler will have the correct Telecom 20mm Green conduit that comes in 6m lengths, its quite cheap. You will also need the swept bends, and obviously some 2pair external cable, again all available at your wholesaler. Make sure you glue any joints. The above links from Ragnor explain how it should be run.

The data points will have to go in a separate duct (but same tench) a 25mm is fine, make sure you use underground external rated cat5e or 6 cable not indoor.

Hi CYaBro,

If you can email me your account number and contact details and the new address I'll ask one of the move house team to have a look into this for you.

Cheers, Gary

+1 for everything Cyril says about how to do it. Only problem I see is that the wholesalers normally don't sell to people who aren't accredited contractors. I know our local Cory's in palmy north won't sell telecom duct to anyone but us and Downers. In saying that though I would still go and try it on.
Is the section in town? or rural? If you are rural and the trench is more than 60m (give or take) then you can bury the cable directly. There are good guidelines on the Chorus website but generally I say just make sure it is at least 600mm and has a good 2-300mm separation from power - whether that is horizontal or vertical separation.

Soo most likely before the move is done

You have to make sure

The internal wiring of your house is actioned by your own private contractor as well as providing a trench for the tech to lay the cable from the boundary to the house.

As long as this is done then Telstraclear can do a move of house requiring a full installation.

Most often customer thinks telco will dig the trench, install the cable, install internal wiring for the house but ISPs will only install the services when they dispatch a tech out

Hi Sam, those rules no longer exist, since the advent of Visionstream and dozens of independant contractors Telecom relaxed those rules. You can now purchase Telecom conduit from your wholesaler, I have even purchased OJ's and similar from Rocpac with no issues, had a long discussion with the Rocpac manager about it one day, simply, the old rules are gone.

I have an account with JA Russell. I assume they will have everything I need?
I am doing all the cabling inside the house myself.

So had another call from TelstraClear saying they can't help me and to contact chorus again.

Will definitely be doing it myself now as no one else seems interested anyway. :)

Well it looks like TC don't really know what's going on!!??

After the call I had the other saying they couldn't help and to contact Chorus I had another call around lunch time today saying that the technician is going to be coming out to the new site, to have a look to see what needs to be done, and they will contact me about 30 mins before they are going to be onsite.
I said to TC rep that I haven't had enough notice and couldn't get away from work this afternoon, can we reschedule?
TC rep said fine shall we make it for Tuesday afternoon?
I said yes that's fine thanks, goodbye.

About 2 hours later I get a call from the technician saying he's on his way to the new site to connect the cable.
I tell him what I told the TC rep and then he says that his job sheet is telling him that the cable is already there and he is just going to connect both ends!
Anyway I told him the correct story and that I can't be there this afternoon.

Will wait and see now if I get a call on Tuesday to go out and meet the technician onsite and that they know what the actual job is!

haha what a laugh. The boys at Cory's obviously haven't got the memo. I was in there not long ago and they had a customer there who was getting increasingly grumpy as they wouldn't let him buy the conduit lol.

Hi, cory's is my wholesaler and I have confirmed with them, its not an issue, but I guess they might be a little more concerned with non account holder walk ins rather than regular tradies going about legit business.

Cheers

Well here we are on Friday and I never got a call from the technician on Tuesday as I was told I would since this is when it was booked in for.
Still waiting for the call....
I will do the job myself.
The problem will be getting the 6m long conduit sections to the house, not sure if they will fit in my little car.
