I think you're onto something there. I've just been trying proxying via an ssh tunnel to my VPS and webpages are much snappier.
SSH is TCP, so what you've managed to do is bypass the proxy farm which might or might not help things.
Set up a PPTP tunnel, which is UDP iirc, and then try pulling some bits over that and you should notice a real difference.
