gu3: One assumes that one can actually get a connection !! Seems that's the first hurdle, staying on, well that's another constant battle and usually at the most crucial moments the gremlins ensure failure !! VF are not earning high points right now.....if any !!

To be fair, we had to expect that HSDPA would have a few teething problems. I've been very happy with its performance apart from this admittedly aggravating issue, and I have no doubt that it will be resolved in due course.

Having said that, my observation has been that the Vodem performs extremely poorly when the signal strength is less than ideal. Moving it around helps but not a great deal, so perhaps this isn't the best device to use if you're in an area where you're not consistently getting a strong signal.

Word from Vodafone is that the issue should be resolved by Wednesday morning. The radio network controllers are being upgraded currently, and Vodafone hopes that'll take care the "freezing".

Yesterday (sunday) vodafone had a stand in the middle of Glenfield mall in Auckland advertising their Vodem... they had dancers up dancin.... i guess to tie in with their "move like never before" slogan...

Anyway... what pings do you get using the vodem.... i can't see it as a real true replacement to fixed broadband untill there is at least a 10GB cap offer for under $100.... i really wish Woosh had lower pings, id cut off Telecoms ADSL in a flash if it or anything else here in crappy Auckland did.... other wireless is crap with the whole LOS ********..... not many peiople in AKL have a clear LOS to the Sky Tower.... we are quite a hilly place!

Pings or Round Trip Times are much better than with first-generation UMTS at 110-130ms, but with spikes much higher than that. I don't think it's right to see Vodafone's HSDPA service as a fixed line broadband replacement, but more like dial-up on steroids. One gigabyte of data should be enough for all of us, but it isn't...

HSDPA is a suitable fixed line broadband replacement for some - but not all - users. I suspect that very few Geekzoners would get by on a 1Gb cap, but the Geekzone community is not representative of the population as a whole.

Well, even if you can keep under the 1GB cap (or 2GB with the $10 extra charge), it couldn't be said to be an "always-on" connection - hence why I called it dial-up. The latency is still too high for gaming as well. I think as a supplement to a fixed-line connection, it's good, but if you can get the same price DSL, why bother?

But you can't get DSL for the same price because it requires that you pay $40 a month to Telecom on top of the monthly ISP charges. A lot of people fail to factor that in when comparing prices.

3G Broadband is not for everyone, but as someone who only does little more than web browsing and email on my home computer, it's a perfectly adequete fixed line alternative for me.

I agree with Alsta. My brother-in-law who is not technically literate went out and purchased a Dell laptop and data card specifically for internet access. He does not have a phone at home (uses mobile) and has never owned a PC before. He saw the purchase as being more practical and logical than desk PC and DSL. I am sure that 1 or 2GB will be more than enough for him but then again he did ask me the other day how to go about acquiring music and movies.....of course I referred him to his nearest Sounds store.

I've been experiencing the same - It's been getting progressively worse since I bought the Vodem to the point at which it is now unuseable. (tested in Chch, several areas of Auckland, 3 computers, even different SIMs because I was told there were no known issues)
A reconnect gets me about 30 seconds of Internet before it stops working again.

Vodem worked really well the day I bought it but would recommend anyone against getting one until they know this problem has been fixed by Vodafone.

At least they know about it now so presumably will be fixed. I've been told there were no known issues the last few weeks I've been calling the help desk which made it even more frustrating...

I would have thought a prominant network status message on the Vodafone website would save their customers wasting time trying to fix the unfixable?

I have tested this today from Wellington CBD, and still had problems. I was told soon afterwards that a fix was deployed to Auckland and in the new day it will be also applied here in Wellington.

Things were going well last night, but the connection locked up just as I was about to go to bed. I'm not using it at the moment, but will report back tonight to let you know if the situation has been resolved.
