Hi all.

I have been using a Vodem for about six weeks now and it generally performs pretty well, but I seem to have a problem whereby my connection suddenly stops responding every now and again. It doesn't actually disconnect, but in order to immediately restore the connection I have to manually disconnect and reconnect.

It happened to me just before and rather than disconnecting, I decided to do some testing with the connection still active. I pinged several servers, and received timeouts on about 50% of ping attempts to any given server. The results appear to be the same regardless of whether I ping a domain name or an IP address. Then, after about ten minutes, the connection suddenly returned to normal without me having to disconnect and reconnect.

I'm curious as to whether anyone else has experienced this, or whether anyone has a theory on what the cause might be.

Yes - I have seen it on several occasions. Same thing. In Auckland at the weekend it appears that the DNS server at Voda was not responding at times. Compared to my EVDO AirCard the Vodem is quite unreliable and unresponsive to the point of frustration. I spent a lot of time having to disconnect/reconnect the Vodem.

I am not saying this just because I work at Telecom either.

I would not say a DNS issue as 2G was no issue

I am in the Wellington CBD, Astoria (just below the Vodafone offices) and this happened to me twice in less than 15 minutes just now.

I think you will find this is not related to specific hardware. I've heard something is coming up soon.

I've had similar issues for weeks.... however have not thought much of it. Can get really annoying.

Can you elaborate any further?

Thanks

Something in the form of an update on their services. Sorry I can't be more specific, but we should test again later this week to see if this continues...

I'll be watching, this problem is driving me nuts. Seems to always happen at crucial times. So far VF have been no help whatsoever but keep promising the moon.....gu3

Yep as

My freind rung Vodafone today and had a small hissy fit over there Vodem that was connected but would not pass data. (sounded if it needed a laxative he he )

He was told by customer service there was a software upgrade tonight / Thursday morning that should fix these issues and they where vague what that was.

I suppose we will have to wait and see till tomorrow

Well maybe I've been very lucky then.

In fact no I probably haven't.

I've had 3 devices (Vodem, Novatel XU870 and V1100) running side by side on different laptops, the V1100 and Novatel modem both held a connection for a solid hour whilst the Vodem dropped out 2-3 times (on average)in the same time period. This has been done numerous times over the last 10 days with the Vodem the only thing having issues.

There may well be network issues, but I've only experienced problems with the Vodem.

Is this happening intermittently when you are using the connection ie downloading/streaming or when you are idling ie reading a long news article or forums or IM'ing (like MSN Messenger n stuff)

If its only happening when idling/semi idling that its normal; it drops your connection as only so many people at one time can use the 3G broadband service on the said cell tower; so it does that to kind of juggle people using it
At least thats the impression I was given when the service was being tested back in the day

After a period of inactivity, it seems to take a few seconds for the Vodem to be kicked back into action, and as you say that's probably normal. The problem that I'm describing is the connection suddenly becoming unresponsive without warning. If you read back through this thread, you'll see that it's been acknowledged that this is a network issue.

And I was told a fix is being deployed - or it was. not sure of the status now.

As per Alasta's comments, it happens even while connect to an Exchange Server, or downloading a file, or loading a webpage. It's not after a period of inactivity, but at any time during a connection.

One assumes that one can actually get a connection !! Seems that's the first hurdle, staying on, well that's another constant battle and usually at the most crucial moments the gremlins ensure failure !! VF are not earning high points right now.....if any !!
