Motivate them? How? "I'll go to another cable provider then!"
Them = "good luck with that" :)

"I'll smash ya face if you don't give me those shoes" isn't the best way to get your kids a new pair of shoes, and that's how I see such an idol threat like that.

MMC is right...  capacity from SCCN does cost the same in Syd as Akl....

...but unprotected capacity on PPC1 is much cheaper in Syd than protected capacity on SCCN.

SCCN being the only provider in New Zealand is going to have to start doing much more to look after the interests of New Zealanders in New Zealand if it wants to stay the only provider on the block.

It would be much simpler for TCL to get me the sort of value on their HFC network than for me to have to spend time lobbying the LFCs to focus on over building the HFC networks as a priority.

I grow tired of Australians having more value in their internet space than we have in our....  how about you?

Personally I'm looking forward to Orcon's Fibre, they already offer it in some places throughout NZ.

http://www.orcon.net.nz/external/genius/geniusfibre.php

$239 a month for 100 down and 50 up along with a 1TB usage cap..

Currently getting charged 200 a month for 100 down 10 up, 150GB plan with Telstra...  Currently using 350-500GB a month so it becomes quite costly with these ancient plans.

Yes.  It's why we need to build and own our own infrastructure, so our kids don't have to leave their home to find work and not live in poverty.  I really feel for the Samoan guys down the road who work all day to send funds back home.

I guess what you're saying, if BB is so wonderful in .au, why not just go live their like the 40,000 other New Zealanders who left last year.

But it seems to me that we're just subsidizing their capacity by our biggest telco owning 50% of the main, and fastest cable, and not delivering benefits to New Zealanders.

I don't want my child to have to leave New Zealand just to be empowered in a digital age...  others may be happy just to wave NZ good bye just as my island neighbours have waved their home good bye.

On topic, you raise a very good point...  A key way to motivate Telstra to move is clearly to motivate Telecom to add more value, so the key is not to tell Telstra you're leaving, but get Telecom customers to leave Telecom and join Telstra, not the other way around.

Actually according to the web site you linked, the price is $159 currently.

So it's roughly 16 cents per mb v's $1 per mb.

I confess, I don't understand it.  Orcon is a what...  $30m dollar SOE, while Telstra is a $1.5b corporate company and they can only bring an 8th of the value?

How is Orcon able to deliver this sort of value while Telstra clearly can't?

As I said above, clearly what needs to happen is we all need to get really focused on getting Telecom DSL customers to move to Telstra, and we need to rally to get that to happen before November so everyone has time to react for the summer season...

How many of you kids want to be sitting at home on 40Gb for 7 weeks over the Xmas break?

I'm already on the top plan and didn't see a link to something bigger.

Cool, but is that a deal for 100/10 with 150Gb?

They did all this banging on about how the HFC network did not need to be over built, but look at what's happened with just a tiny roll out of the UFB - Orcons value is 800% better than what I'm getting from Telstra.

I'm so holding out for the ComCom to just approve the VF deal so we can move forward.

But ya, like so many here, I'm also hanging out for the UFB to pass my door.  I expect that will happen early next year.

Don you are such a Telstraclear fanboi.

People need to switch to ISP's other than Telstraclear and Telecom to have the effect you suggest (like Snap, Slingshot and Orcon) so those other ISP's have more economy of scale.

You want both Telecom and Telstraclear to have falling market share which prompts them into better competitive offers data cap wise, review of their no open peering policies etc etc.

You are forgetting that ISP's target different niche's on purpose. Price is often an indicator of quality/reliability.  You don't want every ISP to have very cheap but highly contented/congested offerings only. Telecom and Telstraclear target the wide middle of the road market and will always be more expensive then say Slingshot for example.

Also Geekzone users are not representative of the entire market, median data usage per month is way way lower than what most geeks use.

Great to see that we both clearly agree the answer to this problem is to move as many customers as we can from Telecom to other providers.

I was simply addressing the question of how to get TelstraClear customers more value.

Stage 1 is we need to get customers off Telecom to TelstraClear.

A weak indirect change like that won't be earth shattering.

Telstraclear customers should be leaving Telstraclear for other ISP's DSL plans if they want more data for less $$, that would be a direct real effect the bean counters would notice.
