Using the same idea as Johnr from Vodafone, check your modem DHCP details for a client that you do not recognise. Your modem may give you accurate timing details of last login, hinting which machine was involved with the usage if any.

As Freitasm pointed out there was a thread recently about a game update being stuck which caused a data blow out. That was my thread a couple of weeks ago. I was in the same boat as you, woke up to an email saying we'd gone over cap. Eventually tracked it to a malfunctioning update program which got stuck in a verification loop.

If you can, check the network monitor on your machine and your partners to see if there is background network usage running constantly. Windows has a Resource Monitor under the Performance tab of Task Manager which will show you every program that's using the network connection, that may provide some answers if it turns out the usage was legit. Not sure where the equivalent would be on your partners Mac.

Activity Monitor, in the Utilities folder (inside Applications folder).

Click on the network tab and it will tell you what's happening.

Is your partner running Lion? 10.7.5 lion update last week. IIRC the update download was 675MB on my system. iOS6 is about the same.

But this is maybe only 10% of your total.

I had a situation sometime ago with a large appstore update download running on the launchpad (xcode) which did not track progress and started from the beginning again if I restarted during the process. I am new to Apple and unsure if this is typical or something specific to some types of update. I doubt that is your problem, but who knows.

10.8.2 also came out a few days ago. That could have used it up. Not sure how big it was but the combination of Mac updates + iOS updates can run into the GB's

Just did a Google and 10.8.2 is 697.54MB. I would also take JohnRs advice and change your WiFi password to something more complicated as you dont know who could be parked out on the street using your broadband for downloading.

Working my way through the password change process now. That said the speed has always been fine so I'm not suspicious about this but seems worth doing anyway.

Thanks for the info on update sizes. My thought has always been that whilst their definitely have been updates the amount of data supposedly used just doesn't seem realistic.

Bear in mind if the Mac has been updated to 10.8 it'll now be doing silent updates while closed, so check the Power Nap settings to see what's what. It could be doing app/OS updates without any interaction from a user.

I was having problems with my cap being blown after a couple of weeks. I managed to trace the cause though - it was because about thirteen years ago, we had a baby boy.

Downloaded TUC usage checker after reading another thread and thought this cant be right - only 13 days in and have already used 65GB!!!! (on an 80Gb plan)
Checked on the Vodafone site and I had (apparently) used 36991.50 on the 21st Sep!! Nows that's a lot of youtubing (-;

Called Vodafone and they were really cool about it - listened to Crowded House on hold for a min and then they came back and said they had removed that day completely from the usage - sweet!
