An thanks guys.

Just found Chorus's service availability site and discovered my address on the border of this giant Mt Eden area.

Annoying as this article (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/7872) that some of you have previously commented on suggests that 50% of addresses are within 500m from a cabinet and 80% within 1k.

Looks like I probably fall into the other 20% >_<

Please forgive my double post - but can anyone explain why the Mount Eden exchange seems to service a gigantic area, whereas there are some much smaller bordered zones nearby?

I notice some of those smaller zones even have VDSL!

Surely it would have made more sense to link houses/streets to their nearest exchange?

I'll have my internal wiring looked at soon and am hoping that will fix my disconnection and 'slow-down' issues, but if not I'm wondering if the 'slow downs' need to be attributed to congestion.

If my theoretical max is 10Mbps then could general nightly congestion in my giant exchange area bring me down below 1Mbps?

Hi, the most likely reason that the exchange area is so large will have todo with the way the street distribution would have been partitioned when layed out 40yrs ago, when there was no need to keep tails within 2km, rathe 5km was easily the go.

I would suggest the age of the cabling layout in this area has a lot to do with it, as typically NZPO/Telecom utilized passive street cross connect cabinets that have then become the location of the active whisper cabinets, but if the historic cabling did not provide passive cabinets it is obviously harder to install active ones retrospectively.

Regardless the performance requirement of the cabinetisation program was to give 80% of tails 10Mb/s or higher, you appear to meet that.

The big central area is addresses connected to the exchange, the smaller outlying areas are the cabinets. The cabinetised areas will be the ones deemed to be too far from the exchange (by cable route) to get 10Mb/s.

Each area will have a smaller area closer to the cabinet or exchange that can receive VDSL due to the short length of copper from the address to the cabinet or exchange.

Okay so, had Coffeebaron come in and install a Master Splitter and it increased the line rate (Coffeebaron was awesome - highly highly recommended!) however, the disconnections and slowdowns have persisted.

It's disconnected 6 times in the past hour .. and my usual 10mbps connection has slowed to 2mbps tonight.

Have had two Chorus techs come and check that the problem isn't external, and Coffeebaron has confirmed the problem isn't internal.

Just called Vodafone and the support guy I spoke to is sending one final Chorus tech, and if that doesn't work he suggested perhaps I could be shifted from the red network to LLU.

Is this potentially a good fix?

Edit: just wanted to note, despite my utter frustration at the continued issues I'm facing, the voda guys have been awesome and really helpful.

With the low sync rate, and high (18.6dB) noise margin, it looks as though something is periodically putting a lot of noise on to the line, causing the connection to drop, and re-sync at a lower rate. When the noise goes, you are left with the connection established at the low rate, but the noise margin climbs again.

Is there anything on your property, or nearby that would be generating a lot of electrical interference?

Do your immediate neighbours have similar issues at all?

Do you mean from Red Network to Wholesale? (I thought Red Network == LLU, so moving from Red Network to LLU doesn't seem to make sense)

Runningman - brilliant thought. No idea regarding the neighbors, both seems to be fairly reclusive.
I can't think of anything obvious that would cause electrical interference - what sort of thing would do that?

Oops yes Sidefx - I meant wholesale >_<

I would be quizzing your ISP on what Chorus actually checked. My guess was a quick check of the joints and thats it. They need to actually spend some time and diagnose the fault. If CoffeeBaron has put a splitter in then the problem is almost certainly external. Probably an imbalance on the pair feeding you.

And when you plug your address into the chorus SAT it only shows you as covered by the Exchange not a cabinet?

I live in your area, near the corner of balmoral and dominion road, and was previously with vodafone.  Had similar issues to you and it was all fixed by moving from red network to wholesale so I was serviced by a cabinet much closer than me (around 600-700 metres) instead of the exchange which is I believe a good 4-6km away.  If you're not covered by a cabinet then I'm not sure moving to wholesale will help...

All sorts of things - I don't know your area sorry, but here's a few ideas

Factory with high consumption electrical machinery
Amateur radio transmitter
Welders

Or as chevrolux suggested, an unbalanced pair from the exchange feeding your house. This would have far less impact on voice, but make the line prone to picking up electrical noise. A good Chorus tech should be able to determine that though.

Sidefx, if you check out the pic at the top of this page, there's a cabinetted area really close to me, but my house falls outside of it and I'm forced to connect to the Mount Eden Exchange which is approx 3k away.

RunningMan - thanks for the suggestions. My area is Mount Eden/Balmoral and it's all suburban. I can't think of anything like that nearby at all. The only thing nearby other than houses would be the local school down the road.

I just got a call from another Chorus tech who is heading to my place now. I explained my story all over again and suggested checking for any electrical interference (didn't get the post about a potential imbalanced pair until after I talked to him but I'll ask when he calls back).

you're lucky to be just out of reach of the exchange and on a cabinet... The exchange coverage stretches just far enough for Ghostextechnica and I.  You are appox half way between our two locations :P

i'm on euba wholesale connection with callplus and its rock solid.  a switch might be worth a shot.  maybe the chorus equip works better at distance than the Vodafone red equip

I'm surprised by the size of that non-cabnetised exchange area...  looks like some prime realestate there won't have VDSL avaiable and won't get UFB for a good while either?  ouch.

Hmm... I wonder what affect the different target SNRM on wholesale vs red network would have here; 6db on red network vs 12 on wholesale right? I'm guessing vodafone would have changed this from their end as part of troubleshooting for OP though.
