It may not seem that big of a deal, but you really notice it when you loose the HD voice codec and go back to the old system. Its like going from a digital master to an old 78 record ;)

BTW: Are you one of the analogs? The "LPs are better than CDs" crowd? ;)

CDs any day.. Was so glad when LPs were replace. No more click and pop, changing sides every 20 minutes, no more expensive shipping if you bought them off shore though I have to admit when I bough my new HT system about 8 years ago i also bought a turn table as well and pulled out some of my NZ made LPs from the 1960s. They were very good sounding compared to the crappy NZ made mono/stereo compatible ones of the 1970s and later..

I so agree with this.

These use a data network to support the call, so as long as the software supports some HD codec then yes.

Eg, you could use a SIP softphone with the G.722 wideband codec to make an HD calls (so long as the codec can be preserved end to end eg. not out to the PSTN).

I think Skype has HD voice also.

Skype uses a variable bitrate codec for both audio and video so it'll always deliver the best quality audio and video - it's sampling rate goes up to 24kHz. In reality most Skype calls these days on a broadband connection will be "HD audio" which has really just turned into a generic term to define a voice connection that uses a higher frequency range that regular POTS.

Honestly I've never really had a significant issue with the call quality on my mobile phones, what rates do the voice use for mobile calls?

Simple answer is "depends".

The AMR codec can use different bitrates depending on the network conditions.

I have a considerable issue with voice quality on mobiles, some of the calls I get at work are totally atrocious, no idea if it is the handset or the network is using that abortion of the first gen GSM codec or whatever, but better voice on mobiles is desperatly needed.

How does HD voice compare with uncomressed for not sounding like a crappy 1990's realmedia stream for voice calls?

I was actually going to post on this, I've noticed HD voice on Snap but only to one destination in the UK and to a friend locally. The Fritz phone shows HD on the screen and it shows HD in the Fritz Box

Anyone else noticed this? I'd be keen for another Snap user to PM me to check as I can only replicate it to 2 places and both are toll calls, it only appears to work with the Fritz phone though. The quality is pretty amazing.

I'm not sure if the Fritz can provide mos scores, but most of my calls show the same latency, I have VDSL and have been playing around with the settings which has caused interleave to turn onto high, although I've never noticed any issues at all with call quality, the HD calls still sound absolutely brilliant, the one number that I can call from Christchurch to Auckland sounds amazing, although its taken my wife a bit of getting used too as its quite different from normal quality, you certainty notice it when you drop back!

On that note I called the Snap helpdesk as I wanted them to reset DLM and asked about HD voice, they said that it has been available to their corporate users for sometime, but only activated on Snap plus for the last couple of weeks, I asked if it was just Snap Plus and they said for the most part yes but did say that they saw some internal reports of quite a of Snap Plus to Snap Plus users making HD calls as it was enabled on the Fritz by default once they turned it on in their network, I asked how many users that might be and they replied with in excess of 10k already (was kind of surprised they answered that) Very keen to try and call another Snap user now!

Yes HD voice has been progressively rolled across all our voice switches during the past couple of months and now all Snap Plus customers will have access to this (as long as they have a HD capable handset, I.E FritzFon) at the moment since most interconnect links between Telco's dont support G722/HD it will for the most part be limited to Snap Plus customers calling Snap Plus (and some Snap Business SIP trunk customers), however so far there have been a fair amount of calls that have already been completed in HD!

Vodafone is rolling out its latest innovation in calling technology today – High Definition (HD) Voice – delivering crystal-clear voice quality and noticeably reducing background noise on calls made between customers using Vodafone’s network.

The technology is the smartphone equivalent of switching from Standard Definition to High Definition television. Customers will notice a significant improvement in how their calls sound – at no extra cost.

Consumer Director, Matt Williams, says that while Vodafone’s pioneering 4G network continues to thrill data lovers, this technology innovation has been introduced for the voice fans.

“This feature is perfect for consumers who love a chat. It takes mobile calling to a new level of quality and dramatically improves the overall experience. The sound is so clear it’s as though you’re standing next to the person you’re calling – even if you’re hundreds of kilometres apart. It doesn’t matter whether you’re at a sports match, on the train or in a crowd – you don’t need to raise your voice to be heard by the caller.”

Vodafone’s HD Voice technology is already being used by a small number of officers and staff at New Zealand Police – an organisation where accuracy and speed really counts. The service helps make conversations easier to hear and cuts the time spent repeating or clarifying information.

“Voice technology has remained largely unchanged since mobile handsets were introduced in New Zealand in the 1980s,” Williams continues. “The introduction of HD Voice makes it easier for callers to communicate clearly with each other, and provides another example of Vodafone network innovation.”

Over 250,000 customers on Vodafone’s network will have access to HD Voice calling – for free – without having to do a thing. More customers will enjoy this feature as the range of HD-capable devices increases.

HD Voice technology will be available to Vodafone customers from 7 November – only on the Vodafone SuperNet, the superior network for landline, mobile, broadband and TV.
