Move them over to flip.co.nz if they are super hard-up.
$49.95 per month - so as they put it - phone + free 5GB broadband.
You supply the modem - but they arent expensive.

What do they pay for dialup per month? I imagine the money saved on not paying that would pay for the splitter and a modem pretty quick - and I cant see how the internet is even usable on dialup these days.....

sbiddle: Yip if they're now on the Red network (ULL) then low speed modems aren't going to work because they're not really a supprted product in the VoIP world.
 
Ultimately they will have to move because dialup will end up an obsolete product.


It may in fact be that the modems are (technically) non-compliant, in that they don't send the 2100Hz echo-suppresion tone, either because they can't, or because they have been configured not to do so.

Echo suppression/cancellation has never really been used (yes, I know there are exceptions) on the NZ PSTN, so modems that don't conform to the standards and don't send the tone don't encounter any problems. However, if you are going through VoIP, then you DO have echo cancellation; and that destroys modem signals (which look remarkably like echo), so you need to turn it off via the aforementioned tone.

I don't know that this IS the reason, but it's worth looking into.
