chiefie: How or where you change the MTU though?

if tcl can't handle 1500 mtu on their network that's a fault, not something you should be working around.

Same, having difficulty trying to get to www.tumblr.com - though some tumblr blogs are fine, just not actual tumblr itself.

Copy of my post from the youtube issues thread - relating to network issues here in Chch on Cable network (as requested by Mauricio)
Regards
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Hi John,

Thanks for the response from VF.

Definitely ongoing problems here in Chch on Cable continuing today. e.g. Logging into Geekzone Acct problematic, Stuff would not load but NZ Herald does (different hosts and links) - VPN via Sydney would access ok. Quite a few sites not completing to load.

A Speedtest to Snap Chch shows with half speed upload speed at 1Mb and around 10Mb download, ping 1 to 7secs on a 15/2MB cable connection. Similiar to VF Auck server, with longer pings at 15 to 20 secs. Results bouncing around which is not normal for Docsis connection on cable when TCL routed. Uplink is really "laggy", downloads stalling/freezing up.

A few thoughts:

Wondering if the current VF4G rollout happening in Chch is associated, have VF shifted data centre here in Chch or changed data linking/routing paths for national traffic?

Youtube may be seperate or associated issue, it was a problem a few years back until NZ mirror server was installed at TCL after a lot of complaints. Looks like it is back, maybe international routing / carrier change issue? Have VF shifted off Telstra Reach for US traffic now?

Thanks

@sleemanj .. well spotted ... it is definately MTU related.

dropping MTU to 1300 gets me back to full connectivity .. speedtest 65Mb/s down, 9.8Mbs up.

Most consumer routers DEFAULT to 1500 MTU these days ... my D-Link 835 only allows a minimum of 1300

I know of another TCL customer in my area who has no connectivity ... likely due to same issue. VF helpdesk refuse to acknowledge this problem and both of us have been told that it is a issue with our on-premises equipment and they have booked techs to visit both sites (the standard scripted response)

This is not a hardware/cabling issue. This is a network-layer issue.

I don't see a problem with MTU here in Wellington.

Perhaps we have a couple of problems them:

- MTU affecting CHC
- routes to Australian servers with thre or fours time latency affecting overall customer base
- intermittent problems accessing other international servers

John,

FY- Running at normal speeds here again since about 9.30am this morning. Pulling 15/2Mb downloads out of both Auck and Chch speed tests with good latencies.

Thanks for the work on this.... got the snow and ice off the router eh!

Cheers

Sicking my hand up to say "me too" here.

Have been having problems with very poor performance of internet connection for weeks now and am completely flummoxed about what the cause might be; it might even be a combination of causes since I have noticed some of problems referenced by others (very inconsistent and often unusably slow opening of sites; what looks like an effectively stopped uplink; and - I'm told by those who YouTube - slow YouTub).

Have posted a separate thread with my problem because there could also be other causes.

freitasm: A couple of days ago I noticed latency to to Australia increased three or four times (cdn.geekzone.co.nz for example went up from 35ms to 160ms). This came right after a couple of hours. But I noticed that today this started in the morning and is still going on. Ping to cdn.geekzone.co.nz (Sydney) is getting 150ms instead of the usual 35 - 40ms.

I tried a variety of AU sites, and got direct 60ish pings to all sites (except for your cdn.geekzone.co.nz). One thing really stood out from the tracepaths. (my view in brackets)

leaves NZ on *.telstraclear.net
Hits AU on *.telstraglobal.net (global as it is an international link)

For the low ping websites in AU it then moved to *.telstra.net routes (i.e. as it is now Domestic AU traffic)

However, for your cdn.geekzone.co.nz (and also www.gov.sg), the paths remain on *.telstraglobal.net (i.e. the traffic is destined for overseas).

I would consider the possibility that the traffic is actually terminating in Singapore (where Equinix also have a data center). The last hop that responds is *.sgw.equinix.com after all

edit: would have replied in other thread, but was deleted...

maybe it's the docsis 3 users hogging all the bandwidth and depriving the docsis 2 users?  (100 megabit versus 15 megabit)
