Hmmmm, interesting. I did a wget to see the headers and it worked. So I look in chrome again, dead. So i look in firefox..works.

I wonder if it is trouble with chrome trying to connect to a google server or something. Time for wireshark

I've had a lot of issues recently, especially after DNS changes with sites not loading in Chrome.

It very much looks like Google is doing some kind of DNS hijack, or something.

They always work fine in other browsers, and eventually come right in Chrome.

Firefox working was just fluke. it's just as bad now

looks like massive packet loss for certain http connections

lots of dup ack and tcp retransmission packets, and ultimately no response

oh just checked the network status page

they can't replicate ther problem anymore and think it is r3esolved

perhaps they woild like to stop by my place and they can see the problem is very much NOT resolved. can't access trademe, geekzone, many other sites, other connections are flakey...

I'm beginning to wonder if voda just bit off more than they can chew with the cable network

I don't think it's resolved and it must be something else.

A couple of days ago I noticed latency to to Australia increased three or four times (cdn.geekzone.co.nz for example went up from 35ms to 160ms). This came right after a couple of hours. But I noticed that today this started in the morning and is still going on. Ping to cdn.geekzone.co.nz (Sydney) is getting 150ms instead of the usual 35 - 40ms.

Problems in Cashmere, Christchurch as well. Started 4.30ish this afternoon. Some traffic moves, other traffic seems like it is missing a return route from the remote server. Traceroutes stop inside the TCL network .. from inside and out.

Can access the affected sites fine via cellular-data. Helpdesk have booked a tech to come and 'look at my wiring' on thursday ... this feels more like a routing issue... offered to send him traceroutes from both ends ... declined.

This is an MTU problem

I have reduced my MTU to 600 and this appears to correct the problem.

I discovered this by accident, I sent a very short email and it worked, I sent a longer email and it hung, I then had a eureka moment - a packet size problem.  I reduced the MTU and the long email sent without any problem.  I increased the MTU back to 1500 and the long email failed to send again.

I can reliably replicate this.  MTU 1500, problems evident, MTU 600, problems gone.

How or where you change the MTU though?
