Inphinity: Can I ask, if you can clue me in on the benefits of paying $315 to join ($285 for the 'required' MP264 gateway, plus $30 to transfer from another ISP), plus $200/month for 500GB - $71/month more than I pay for VDSL w/500GB with Telecom. I may be missing it, so forgive me if so, but it's not clear what you provide to justify the significantly higher price compared to Telecom, Snap etc?

From my take on the deal, the MP264 isnt required, but obviously a VDSL modem is, bring your own maybe?
Also I find the price is $225/month, that makes it $96/month more than telecom?

My reading of https://www.wxc.co.nz/residential/hardware/residentialgateways/ seems to be that the MP264 is the currently recommended device, but existing devices are still supported for VFX.

However, none of the older devices have built in VDSL support.

Given the higher throughput demands of UFB and VDSL, some of the older residential routers wouldn't be up to the task.

The MP264 is certainly not locked down - except for the VFX line if you have one.

Yes that is correct Matt, we looked at all the crap routers that are in the market today and decided enough of cheap and nasty , WXC has always been known for offering quality product offerings , we wont be the cheapest as having a business model where you make no money is not a good option.

The MP264 was customised specifically for WXC for the New Zealand market and offers a lot, its a all in one device that covers all access products, FTTH, DSL, VDSL so no matter where you move you have a product that will work with any access at your location. its a top quality router and is a damn fine product I will say, if you want cheap and nasty routers there are other options but we don't do cheap and nasty.

The box itself as with all WXC certified products plugs straight into our Voice product and actually unlike others sounds and works just like the PSTN , the same dial tone, ring tones etc. we have also removed the requirement for you to have to put in any provisioning rules once signed up and logged on it all self provisions, takes about 3 minutes to be and running in the fibre world.

I imagine the other requirement missing off some of the older gear would be the WAN VLAN tagging (OK on the SRP series, but not the rest?).

Is there any publicly available documentation for the MP264? The web site has a basic overview, but doesn't get into the technical details of the available features.

Forgot to add has some other very cool features with web site restriction as well as scheduled web access based on connected device type ... block your kids from accessing the network after 10.00pm :)

I've been happy with my trial MP264 although admittedly I'm underusing it (it has not replaced my pre-existing ceiling-mounted UniFi Pro for wireless nor my OpenVFX/Asterisk) but I'm very happy with how it's performed. One wee OpenVFX related minor glitch but that was promptly sorted out as part of the trial. I have full 30/10 VDSL2 with this baby.

Mine has the "old" 2012 WxC logo, does that make it vintage? :)

Seems the price is now listed as $250 for 500GB Fusion (I'm sure it said $200 when I looked the other day) - I'm still unclear what's really included, for the ~$80+ extra charge over what other ISPs cost for 500GB plans. Anyone able to clarify?

I've been using the MP264 for a bit over a month now, along with the changeover from ADSL to VDSL...

I'm extremely happy with the router - it provides a wide range of functionality, probably more than I will generally need, but also a stable and easy to configure piece of equipment. Setup was near painless - I can see why WxC has gone this route of easy initial provisioning, but still with enough ability to configure specifics.

Speed wise? I was feeling pretty smug with nearly 10Mb/s with ADSL - but it jumped to just a bit before 30 down, and 10 up.

My own data use is relatively small, so the pricing is still comparative and appropriate - but with the additional bandwidth, I can start to see the use going up, even without our daughters visiting.

All in all? I think WxC has done a good job with this release - the MP264 is *certainly* a good choice. It allowed me to eliminate three of the various boxes (all with wires) that cluttered my desk. And the communication, setup and support from WxC was excellent throughout the process.

I've been with WxC for about 7 years now - so very nice to deal with an organisation that 'fits' in terms of my own support requirements (not much, not often, but when I do need help, enjoying speaking to a tech who can suss out and speak to me at the tech level I want to work at...)

The MP264 makes perfect sense given WxC is the ISP of choice for voice services. Using a fritzbox or anything else would have been a disservice to the 'real'/voice customer base.

And it's about time that old website was overhauled :)

Please don't misunderstand, I'm not bagging the MP264, it appears to be a great product. My complaint is that it appears from the website that it is Required for a Fusion plan, maybe I have that wrong but thats my understanding. I'm more than happy with my current device, and don't think you could call it a cheap one. But it has the mixture of features that I am happy with so I don't want to have to change it. I'd be happy to pay $100 a month and loose 10GB to get VDSL but I don't want to have to buy a $280 device to do that when I have a perfectly capable device already.

Why would you bother? If you want a VDSL2 modem that's simply acting as a bridge you're far better off buying something for 1/2 the price.
