I'd have to check if SNAP can support VDSL on rural South Auckland cabinet. Its probably not a SNAP but Chorus issue.

Why would I change now? If you are on the RBI zone (fringe of rural Auckland) and have been waiting for decent speed, you look at any option. For you guys int the UFB zone its not such a big deal.

Kraven:
sbiddle: Out of curiosity what makes you suddenly want to look at changing now? There have been 20+ ISP's and resellers offering VDSL2 services for the last 18+ months.

For me it came down to price. I'm a tight-ass and couldn't justify the increase from $65 on Vodafone (100GB Naked ADSL with On Account Mobile discount) to what Naked VDSL plans were available before the recent price drops. The new service I have signed up for gives Naked VDSL with 200GB for $85 which offers extremely good value.

Who are you with now Kraven?

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

 1) Chorus Prequal is:
  1. Line attenuation: 4-10db         (12.5d / 4.5u current)
  2. Down speed: 17.3 – 20.1Mbs    (14 - 16 current)
  3. Up speed: 5.9 – 10.6   (1Mbs current)
 2) No technical issue to go ahead with an install. And this is near Wailuku, rural south Auckland!!!  But, my modem is only 700 meters from my cabinet.

 3) They claim that their Fritzbox modem is better than Telecom’s Thompson.

eme: Yes, but now Chorus seems to be supporting it, even over copper in the fringe areas.

Even over copper in the finge area - sorry - dont think that will work. THey cant do ADSL over copper in fringe areas, VDSL requires better connectivity and signal than ADSL so why would it suddenly work unless they have done a copper upgrade?

They might promise it but if the copper is too far away or bad, no VDSL no matter what anyone says.

Just about everything is better than telecoms thompson routers - doubled clients internet speed by swapping a Netgear for a thompson.

nunz, my current ADSL modem stats are pretty good, some upgrade must have happened somewhere?

You can't compare the old Thomson's with the VDSL2 variant. Totally different products.

And as for the original Thomson's they actually perform exceptionally well sync wise (despite all their other shortcomings) and I've seen plenty of situations where they will sync significantly higher than any other modems. While I'm not doubting what you post above I would have loved to have seen the line to see what was actually causing the issue you've described, because it wouldn't have been the modem at fault, it would have been another mitigating factor.

When I swapped my Thompson tg582n for a cisco 877 my line speed dropped by 2mb. So on average I think the new adsl2 and vdsl2 modems from Telecom are pretty good. The only other modems I highly recommend are the draytek vigor 120s because of their brilliant half bridging mode. I do however agree the 585s were poor but they haven't been in supply for 4+ years.

Well my reason for waiting for Vodafone is:

a) - I have the Sky bundle so lose close to $20 a month by going elsewhere
b) - I have a SureSignal as I get crap 3G at home and before the Suresignal had to run out to the back yard to answer my phone while trying to enjoy my breakfast and a client rings early.
c) - I get discounts with Vodafone for having my personal and business mobiles with them too.

Although perhaps the answer is

Switch mobiles AND xDSL to Telecom - They do Sky bundles and have better 3G coverage at my house so kill two birds with one stone.

I don't want to do it as I can't stand dealing with Telecom but I'm really stuck with the SureSignal issue - I'm not going to pay for an extra Vodafone ADSL connection on top of a Snap VDSL just to fill in for Vodafone's crap coverage where I live. I live in a built up urban area but unfortunately my house seems to fall right in the middle of the overlap of a series of towers all of which are weak.

I would move to Telecom if they had a sky package, but I don't think they do.

Just found this article about Telecom offering sky tv packages.
http://www.telecom-media.co.nz/releases_detail.asp?id=2899&page=97&pagesize=10
If this package includes fibre we may have to move.

I hope you offer fibre soon Vodafone, because I do like you and your services.

You might want to check the Date on that article - 2003 not 2013
