Forums are abuzz with Telecom's new VDSL offering and orders appear to be pouring in.

As an existing Vodafone/Telstra Broadband customer is it worth waiting for a Vodafone offering or should one switch now?

I think that's what we're wondering over here at Slingshot - jump or wait?

I don't understand why everyone is making such a fuss about the bigger players providing VDSL. It has been available for AGES and only because the media found out that it exists is why everyone is moaning about their provider not providing it.

If you want VDSL go to one of the players that have been doing it for a while. Snap, Unleash etc...

Yes, but now Chorus seems to be supporting it, even over copper in the fringe areas.

?   Chorus has always supported it.  Ok, the pricing has changed a bit and they're now mandating filter installs, both very good things.  But it was still an excellent option before now and worked very well.

And yeah, totally agree about look at one of the great ISPs who have been offering it for a long time.   Once you go snap, you won't go back! :)

I have also just dumped Vodafone to move to another ISP that offers VDSL.

Vodafone will likely be prioritising the unification/deduplication of infrastructure as they move everyone to a single set of infrastructure - i heard moving everyone to mostly telstraclears infra.

I imagine once this is done then they might start offering new services, as it makes sense to do this first. That's my speculation anyway.

I'd be happy if Vodafone would just bring their data caps in line with Telecom's VDSL offering. 500GB would do nicely thanks.

According to Wikipedia, Vodafone started trialling vdsl, with full auckland coverage expected by the end of 2008.

"Vodafone has announced that VDSL2 will be offered in the Auckland area, with availability taking place as each exchange is unbundled. Full Auckland coverage is expected by the end of 2008.[56]"

"
It said it was installing what it called "super" IP DSLAMs, from Huawei, into the first 15 exchanges. The DSLAMs could translate telephone calls into IP, deliver ADSL2+ broadband and also deliver VDSL2 broadband, Vodafone’s general manager of technology for fixed line, David Diprose, said.

VDSL2 technology allows far greater speeds on the existing copper than ADSL.

"All of our DSLAMs come standard with VDSL2 ports so we will offer VDSL2 speeds to 20% of the market at launch,” Diprose said."

Out of curiosity what makes you suddenly want to look at changing now? There have been 20+ ISP's and resellers offering VDSL2 services for the last 18+ months.

Triple play I would say. Locked into Sky, mobile and landline... I am in the same situation. When out of contact I will probably swap broadband and leave the rest with Vodafone.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

That's a good question.
For me it was literally the GZ thread Telecom vdsl thread - all the relevant information in one easy to read location which removed the 'fear' of change.  The deciding factor was the pricing which was comparable for ADSL data plan I'm currently on.

I reckon the Telecom boys in that thread have done well in drumming up new business.

you can get Sky without being with vodafone. of course you dont get the discount, but you certainly aren't locked to VF for broadband.  Same for mobile. you can keep your VF mob but switch broadband providers.

Yes. True. Locked in is the wrong word.

12 months ago having broadband and sky with Vodafone was a compelling option.

The $30 discount on broadband and half priced Sky sport knocks $38 off the monthly bill.

As broadband caps and prices have come down the $30 discount is now not such a drawcard.

For me it came down to price. I'm a tight-ass and couldn't justify the increase from $65 on Vodafone (100GB Naked ADSL with On Account Mobile discount) to what Naked VDSL plans were available before the recent price drops. The new service I have signed up for gives Naked VDSL with 200GB for $85 which offers extremely good value.

Why on earth would you wait for Vodafone when snap already offer a high quality vdsl product?
