Demeter: Got your message - the good news is, it's not a Conklin. The bad news is, it's a BUBA link which is almost as bad, and there is not much we can do to improve your speed if there is significant congestion on this node. From looking at the notes on previous faults you've logged, this is exactly what Chorus have said the issue is. :-( Sorry about that, I can appreciate it must be quite frustrating. Hopefully the equipment is upgraded or fibre comes to your neck of the Plains soon.

The annoying thing is there is already fibre at the cabinet (and at the properties next door to our house now).

So just so I can better understand it the bottle neck is in the shared uplink from the cabinet? If so what speed is the uplink on this cabinet? Is this same uplink shared by ALL ISP's using this cabinet - or do some have their own?

Given there has been fibre at the cabinet site for a few years maybe more now (since before it was an adsl enabled cabinet) and now there is the fibre cabinet right next to it - why is fibre not being used for the uplink - it would seem a simple answer to the problem

Where is the next upstream exchange for data from that cabinet - is it going to Cust? Rangiora? or back to Chch

We use EUBA :-) We are too cool for BUBA.

I assume being a new cabinet, this customer could be moved to EUBA?

They use entirely different backhaul networks.

Now I'm interested - So Could you provide xDSL to our location that is not effected by the same backhaul problems?

From what's been identified the issues are with the Cabinet, EUBA or BUBA that wouldn't change anything given the weakest link is the connection back to the exchange. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

What speed is the shared link back to the exchange? and what exchange does it go back to? Cust or somewhere else?

On an ASAM it's approx 16mbit shared, but this also depends on the cabinet itself. Regardless, all ISP's will offer the same performance as the cabinet itself is the bottleneck.

Edit: it looks like there are a few Conklins in the area, these are getting updated via RBI but the cabinet you're connected to (CU/BB) appears to be not getting upgraded. You're in a bad luck place >.<

16mbit shared over X amount of users connected to the cabinet peak time will mean congestion,

So as confirmed no fault

You got to be joking right?!?!?!?

Working as designed maybe ? - but would indicated poor or outdated design.
Working to its full capabilities maybe - but would indicate that it is seriously under speced,

But to say no fault that is really pushing it.

How many is X - I know its more then 20 - I suspect quite a few more then that

What is being done to pressure corus to sort this something needs done ASAP.

In some ways I feel sorry for vodafone in this as I have already been left with no choice but to move our cellphones off vodafone due to no cellphone coverage due to the sure signal not being able to function properly on our internet connection. I know telecom and chorus are somewhat (artificially) separate now - but its a case of vodafone loses and telecom wins because of chorus's poor network.

But Vodafone is the one that sold us a 400GB/month internet plan when they are not actually really capable of providing it to us.

At the end of the day I just want it sorted.

One solution - not sure how possible solution would be if we could get connected to fibre. Is it possible/what would it cost 100s? 1000s? to get fibre ~170m from a inground junction box at the entrance to subdivision next door along the same side of the road - its all a wide grass area on the same side of the road, no driveways or roads to cross. To our gateway.

Or can someone tell me when this is likely to happen anyway - I can only find it listed as planned but no dates or timeframes

As a sideline note, Chorus have plans via the Rural Broadband Initiative to upgrade these cabinets, they simply can't upgrade all cabinets so are upgrading them case-by-case.

My parents are connected to an ASAM much like yours, they're not getting upgraded under RBI and suffer from the same speed bottlenecks, they're also a business customer so why shouldn't their cabinet be upgraded?

The answer is simply this, it costs approx $200k to upgrade a cabinet, you're getting provided 48kbit from your ISP so it's no way, shape or form a guaranteed speed service. Chorus have to make the money back from their upgrades or see it beneficial. Since you're in a rural location where your cabinet is serving far less than the normal amount of users it might not be beneficial for Chorus to upgrade this, but I'm sure John has a Chorus contact if you're willing to pay for the upgrade or can pass over to Chorus to upgrade this but from experience they're needing at-least 60 customers being served off a cabinet in order to upgrade it, your cabinet looks like it's serving 23 max and for my parents it's approx 48.

If speed is your thing you might want to look at paying for a wireless solution with guaranteed bandwidth.

I am willing to pay a certain amount if it gets the issue resolved, (although paying more just to get the services I am paying for does leave a bit of a sour taste.)

Obviously it would depend on what the actually costs are but paying towards cabinet upgrade probably not best option. If I'm going to spend money I would be better to put it towards trying to get fibre by 1 of 2 ways

a) Get the fibre ~170m down the road to my gate then into my house
b) See if it is possible to set up a fibre internet connection in my name at a neighbours place then set up a wireless link between houses

My parents actually have the ASAM on their farm, with fibre running within 5m of their house, and they're not allowed to touch it for better internet. You might be able to go option B.

Top is xDSL and bottom is a fibre

I would say you are not connected to either of those
