Hi All

I'm really hitting my head against a brick wall here. I believe I have done everything I can to solve this problem but cannot due to it not being a problem in my property. Each time I call vodafone I end up starting again with them saying its a fault with my place/setup. and ending up with them saying its not their problem/they cannot do anything about it its a corus fault

Our situation - We are in a rural area ~1.3km from the cabinet that I believe is only ADSL1 enabled (we only get adsl 1) but I believe it is fibre connected - there is fibre cables going to/past the cabinet - and has been for at least the last few years.  There is also now a fibre cabinet right next to it for the fibre subdivision that has gone in next door to us. So in theory you would think there would not be a problem with bandwidth leaving the cabinet but is seems there is.

We have naked dsl (now - we use to have standard dsl with phone line we never used) there no phones, no faxes no alarms connected to the phone line at all and only 1 phone jack point.

I dont have the figures on me (can post them later if required) but our attenuation rates and SNR are very good/ very much at the good end of what would be expected for 1.3km from cabinet.

Connection speeds negotiated are always Downstream 7.6Mbit+ and upstream 0.7Mbit+.

The connection is not a bad now as it was a few months ago we can now get good speeds and latency usually from about 3am-8am as opposed to having problems 24/7. In the evenings we are lucky to get 0.5-1Mbit and 300-400ms latancy when testing to a chch server.

The reason I think the issue is localised to our cabinet and not further upstream is when we had the big 5 day power cut starting at  ~8pm on Tuesday when this happened I had some big downloads queued and running and before the power cut I was getting a combined speed of 16KB/sec all our gear is on ups's and we also have large deep cycle batteries capable of running it for more then 12 hours so did not lose power. Within 10 minutes of the power cut the SAME downloads were getting a combined speed of 750KB/sec this continued until the cabinet or upstream exchange  wend town around 4am

Later in the week still with no power but with a generator and batteries and a generator now hooked to the cabinet these same speeds were still achievable anytime day or night. This included when power had been restored to many surrounding areas - but not the road that out cabinet serves

I know I need to post more info/full story(I do have alot more info/testing) but I have run out of time at the moment  so will need to update post later.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Hi humvee

Sounds like the copper is connected to a Conklin cabinet, Approx where are you located?

Just cause fibre is going pass the cabinet does not mean it's connected to the cabinet

The Conklin cabinets only have a few E1's for back haul so max maybe 6Mbps shared across all users connected to the Conklin cabinet

Have you got a photo of the cabinet?

If you do a speedtest say 4am compared to 7pm what is the difference?

We can check out what type of cabinet you're connected to - can you private message your customer information and account number to me? I tend to agree with John. Looking at your location, I'm guessing you're on a Conklin.

The symptoms suggest that the cabinet you are connected to has some backhaul limitations (probably a Conklin). Probably the easiest solution is to make friends with someone in the fibre fed subdivision next door and run a wifi bridge back to your place.

In some other notes I have from fault that was logged it is described as an ASAM

Got your message - the good news is, it's not a Conklin. The bad news is, it's a BUBA link which is almost as bad, and there is not much we can do to improve your speed if there is significant congestion on this node. From looking at the notes on previous faults you've logged, this is exactly what Chorus have said the issue is. :-( Sorry about that, I can appreciate it must be quite frustrating. Hopefully the equipment is upgraded or fibre comes to your neck of the Plains soon.

Ages back 6months + both would have given 4-5mbit+

Before I started complaining lots (as opposed to a little) for several weeks anytime day or night was less then 1 mbit - at times as low as 0.01mbit (or speed test page would not load)

Now 7pm would be always under 2mbit, usually around 0.5-1mbit. sometimes slower or speed test page wont load. at 4am I am seeing 5mbit+ most times again

More users now connected and peak time more congestion and fixed line data caps are getting bigger

We use EUBA :-) We are too cool for BUBA.

I assume being a new cabinet, this customer could be moved to EUBA?

They use entirely different backhaul networks.
