maverick: Hi Will,

I would also suggest once your setup giving your SPA2102 a fixed IP address off your Router, you will need to make sure you set the dns entry as well to be your router IP address, this just makes it a more dedicated network with out relying on DHCP.

I would think you would be getting a EMail somtime this morning as well as I believe your order is being processed

Awesome Maverick thank you for that advice. Just need to make sure I got what I have to do.

If the router assigns SPA2101 address say 192.168.0.12 - to make that static for the device do I go to the config page of the WAN side of the device, select Static from the connection type, then under static ip give it the assigned address? Where do I find the dns entry - is that the same as the gateway entry on the WAN config page?

Sorry found the dns entry - under Optional settings/primary dns.

I have hooked up and my router has assigned the SPA2102 192.168.0.12. I have set the WAN connection to static and assigned this address as the static address. I have set gateway to 192.168.0.1 (my default gateway) and set the primary dns as above.

So, all the lights are lit up, I am online still and I can see the SPA2102. Now all I need is the email and repower and hopefully Houston is good to go

You should have an email now Will, it was sent at 9.34 :), if you put that link in and restart your 2102 you should be up and running shortly

Your router will have a DHCP address pool from where it starts assigning addresses. It sounds like yours may be set to 192.168.0.8 or 10. Any devices requesting an address from the DHCP server are assigned an address from this pool.

It is best not to assign any Static IPs in this pool. For my networks, I normally use .1 as the router/gateway address, and then start assigning Static IPs above that. In my case the DHCP pool starts at .16 so I have 14 static IPs available apart from the router.

If necessary, move the starting address of the DHCP pool in your router upwards a few addresses to make extra room.

No, it's separate from the gateway entry. Look for Primary and Secondary DNS in Router Settings. You need to get these IP addresses from your ISP.

Sorry Grant bit lost now

For the time being I have switched the WAN side of the SPA2102 back to DHCP connection and removed the primary dns address (ie put it back to what it was.

My Belkin moden is providing the DHCP service - it assigns 192.168.0.2-99.

So to do a dedicated static set up do I

change SPA2102 WAN config to static connection
set the static address to say 192.168.1.12

where do I set the dns to this address as suggested by Maverick?

I have received my email advising account setup and I have tried to ring my number 99503435 but just a deadline signal. Not able to ring out yet either

Dynamicus: My Belkin moden is providing the DHCP service - it assigns 192.168.0.2-99.

So to do a dedicated static set up do I

change SPA2102 WAN config to static connection
set the static address to say 192.168.1.12

If you set the Static IP of the SPA2102's WAN port to .12, that is within the DHCP pool, which is not a good idea, as your Belkin modem could assign another device to that address once you have changed the SPA2102 from DHCP to Static IP addressing.

There are 2 ways out of this:

1) Reconfigure your Belkin Modem to start assigning DHCP addresses from 192.168.0.16 (for example) and then set the SPA2102 WAN port to 192.168.0.2.

OR:

2) Set the SPA2102 WAN port to 192.168.0.100 for its Static IP.

Either way will work, it's just the first one is a little tidier that's all. Keeps your Static IPs low down in the range, and DHCP higher up. Method (2) has a big hole in the middle between your Static IP ranges (.1 then DHCP then .100 and up).

Your choice!

The Primary and Secondary DNS fields in Optional Router Settings need to be set to the DNS IP addresses as provided by your ISP.

O boy - just about there.

I have resolved the issue of connecting to VFX- when I put the configuration file address in the profile rule (provisioning tab) I must not have saved it. When I put it back in and saved I was able to get a dial tone and call out.

I got a call just after that from Phil so that is fine too.

Still have a few problems though.

For some reason I cannot call from outside to my number 9950xxxx - even though Phil managed to call me on that number - not sure what is happening there - I get short pip sounds.

I try dialling in on my mobile as well 09-9950xxxxbut just get dropped off.

Grant thanks for your tips on sorting out a static set-up. I was suggesting using 192.168.1.12 as opposed to 192.168.0.12 as the static address - I am assuming that would be outside the Belkins pool of numbers. But in any case I now cannot access the web interface of the SPA2102 since the VFX config file has kicked in - it asks me for a username and password to the address 192.168.1.1/admin/advanced - I dont know what it is. I had not set a password to the device and there I cant see anything in the instructions that says what the default may be.

Also I wonder if I should now call the Xnet support rather than taking up your valuable time

A quick call to support - turns out my number is 950xxxx - the 9 at the front is the area code - sheesh! Just made my first call in to my number - yay!!

Now just need to sort the static address and get back in to my router

OK, a couple of final pointers here because it's not really WxC/Xnet's job to answer networking questions:

Dynamicus: For some reason I cannot call from outside to my number 99503435 - even though Phil managed to call me on that number - not sure what is happening there - I get short pip sounds.

I try dialling in on my mobile as well 09-99503435 but just get dropped off.

I tried calling your number from my VFX line just now, but there wasn't any answer.

Sometimes it takes a while for your VFX number to become "available" via other Telcos' networks because they need to change some settings. At least, that's what happened in my case. Within a few hours it was all resolved though. No doubt Phil (Maverick) will be on the case...

Yes, it would be outside the Belkin's pool of numbers, but it is also on a different subnet from your router and other network devices, so it won't help you at all. If you do that, the SPA2102 will not be able to send/receive any packets to/from the internet, so clearly it's not a good idea.

The SPA2102's WAN port needs to have an address in the 192.168.0.x range in order to be able to access the internet.

OK -- that's an easy one because the same thing happened to me...

You need to ask Maverick to enable WAN port access to the SPA2102's Web Server. His guys will do a tweak to the config file, then you will have to power cycle the SPA2102 and FINALLY, you will have a phone connection AND be able to access the SPA2102's Web Server. That is how things are in my case anyway

Hey Grant thanks for your continued help.

Ok - success on phoning out
success on phoning in (once I figured out that the first 9 was the area code)

Success also on getting back in to the web server on the SPA2102 - turns out that the config file from VFX locks down the LAN side. I was trying to access 192.168.1.1/admin/advanced which provides access to the LAN info that VFX has provisioned and is proprietary.

I got a call from Phil and he told me I could still access the basic view which is 192.168.1.1 - then I got in and I can see the dns and set the connection.

So Grant, I could change the connection type to static
set the ip address to 192.168.0.100
then get the primary DNS detail from my ISP

Well I think that is it - once again thanks very much for your great help here
