it sounds like a nice thing to have, someone should come up with a cheap open source product that works over 3G or 4G that can work on android, ios, WP and blackberry. give the finger to apples proprietary crap :P "thanks for the idea heres a cheaper one"

No reason, apart from technical / cost etc, that they couldn't just do VM to email. Could even turn it into a Vodafone app, which would basically be a fancy email client :)

So how come (for example) the US and UK manage it?

Because this is little old new Zealand where we lag behind the 3rd worlds technology. Even South Africa has this. Voicemail to email is another example. South Africa had that over 10 years ago. We still waiting ...

I have VVM on EE in the UK, but network coverage here isn't as well tuned as NZ.

This means there are lots of problems outside London with coverage which means lots of calls go to VM, which makes the feature more useful...

Sitting at work right now with no coverage at all (working in a hospital).

Never said we were third world. I said we lag the third world.

I guess it comes down to what you want. My gripe with not having voicemail to email is actually nothing to do with technology.

It comes down to the greedy ISP's. Its really an easy setup, but Vodafone would prefer to charge customers to retrieve their voicemail. A little bit cheeky if you ask me.

The workaround with voice mail to email is not really a workaround. It required a setup of a 2talk number, and then one has to pay for the forwarded call anyway. I'm surprised though to hear that you would be using such a feature. Maybe its time to let management know that this is really something a lot of customers are interested in. I would be quiet happy to even pay for such a service as long as its no more than $5 per month. I spend a lot on voicemail retrieval each month and its really a ridiculous charge for something which should be free.

There is a good article on Nates blog describing the process. But the calls routed to voicemail (via bestmate) are charged at normal cellphone rates, ie they dont come free.

I'm keen to hear if the calls are still charged this way. I suspect that the calls to the voicemail service will not come off your free minutes either. Could be wrong there so it would be good if somebody tried it out. The article is from 2011 so things may have changed.

Yes it will use included minutes has since day dot and many plans have Voice mail access included free as part of the plan

Good to hear. I may just give this a try again.

BTW whats the real reason as to why Vodafone won't implement this very basic feature? It does not make business sense obviously because it generates quiet a bit of cash I'm sure, but if Vodafone was the first to roll out this feature Im sure a lot of customers on other carriers would be interested in switching. If Telecom or 2degrees offered this I certainly would be interested in moving.
