There are apps that will do this for free, so is there really a need for it? WhatsApp for example.

Assuming you mean leaving video messages as voice mail.

VV is a system where instead of "ring voicemail" it says "Message from Johnny Appleseed"

It was one of the key iPhone features. It is described thus on one of the UK network websites:

"NO MORE CALLING UP

With Visual Voicemail you don’t have to call a number to get your messages, and you don’t have to listen to them in order. Instead just tap your voicemail icon to see all your voicemails as a list on your screen. It’ll show you who the messages are from, when they were left and how long they are. "

The mobile provider needs to have software at their end to support Visual Voicemail

It's basically a proprietary protocol with a lot of patent lawsuits around it at the moment so wouldn't be surprised that it's not a priority for any of the NZ telco's atm.

So how come (for example) the US and UK manage it?

My understanding is that Vodafone considered implementing this back in 2008 but it had a cost somewhere around $200k with little return on the investment so the business case got binned. Maybe back in 2008 there was more desire by the UK/USA providers to attract iPhone users?

$200k is pocket change to a worldwide business like VF. Their CEO probably spends more than that annually on travel!

incorrect but I can't go into details and if it was only 200k it would of been done along time ago

There are actually very few networks globally that have VVM deployed, in part because it's a proprietary solution that as pointed out costs big $$$

Had Visual voicemail on my iPhone in Norway when I was with one of the carriers there. Its nice, but it didn't stop me from switching providers when I got a better offer (and better reception) with the other big carrier.
