Those line rates are very poor for the plan you are subscribed too. Your area of Auckland shouldn't be an issue, unfortunately your DSL state is down currently so i cant run a diagnosis for you. I'll try and check it later on this morning and hopefully your DSL is back up and i can get a reading on your line conditions.

I'm off line as I need to get the WAG installed today.  Since I'm at work at the moment I'll pop back about then to turn it on again. I'll bring up the DSL after 1pm if that ok with you?

Thanks.

Sorry been at work till 9 to day :-(

Anyway connected wag at home, muddled through the settings (after all the fun playing with CAR now safely returned to my pet vendor). I'm connected to HSI and I think (now that you've announced the VFX charge changes) I'll go for VFX too.

This is from the Status page on the WAG.

It looks better but the speed test I ran @ 11pm indicated 2.1Mbs - again is something I should expect or could there be issues that need to be addressed still please?

Many thanks for your patience.

You've certainly got nothing to worry about here.  Those rates are excellent.

According to the Downstream Attenuation figure, you are about 2.7km from the exchange which is great.  SNR Margins and Attenuation are all in the Good/VeryGood or Excellent ranges.

It is probably just the usual peak-hour congestion causing this.

Try www.speedtest.net between the hours of 1am to 7am (ideally) and see what you get.

It should also be fairly fast from 7am up until around 4pm when all the kids get home and start hitting the net.

Certainly a huge improvement on the old modem you were using until yesterday Cool

cheers dude.

Could it have been caused not by the modem (which was adsl2+) but by the old telephone cable I was using? I bought a rj11->BT converter box at DSE today and plugged the new modem into it. There is also new dec phone plugged in the other room at the same time. Yes I am a happy bunny!

Also the fact that I have an integral filter, does this mean I can only plug the WAG in here? I suspect so - but atleast its worth the extra for wireless now!

thanks again for all your support. I'll be mentioning this level of support all over the place now.

Many thanks

Pretty unlikely I would say.  Telephone cables either work or they don't.  It's hard to imagine that a phone cable could have caused such a drop in your line speeds.

YES, that's correct.  You can only plug an ADSL modem into the jackpoint labelled as "JetStream".  And because the filter is hard-wired, you cannot plug an ADSL modem into any other jackpoint around the house because they are all on the low-pass output of the filter.

As you had already figured, the best way to get around this is to put in a Wireless Access Point, then you can roam all over the house while still being connected to the Net.
