coffeebaron: "Next registration in 1074s" say what! that's nearly half an hour.
Troubleshooting with another router, disconnect phone line, wait for VFX to drop out, reconnect phone line, DSL back online, VFX back online - a good start.
Repeat experiment:
Disconnect ph, wait for VFX to drop out, reconnect, still waiting for VFX to come back online. Login into PAP2T, status says next reg over 1000s, a long time to wait.
What would cause the re-registering time to jump so high?

There are a couple of settings which we had already checked in your profile, depending on whats happening will depend on the timer used will revisit this on your config and see what we see Fraser

Hi Josh,

Did some more experimenting with my current setup. Last night I pull the phone cord, waited for VFX to drop out, reconnect and left over night. This morning VFX was not up.
Reset PAP2T this morning, went out for about an hour, came back & VFX still not up.
I then unplugged some cables from my router (to test a network switch), during this time inadvertently had only the PAP2T plugged in. VFX kicked back into action.

I'm now coming to the conclusion that to duplicate this issue, there needs to be more things attached to the Dynalink router. I suggest plugging the Dynalink router you have into a switch, then plug in the PAP2T and a few PC's etc into switch and see if you can now replicate VFX not coming back online after an ADSL outage.

Let me know how you get on with this scenario. I'm sure this issue does exsist and there's nothing in my coffee making me go mad!

Hi Fraser,

Actually we have exactly this, we have a couple of IP Phones, A PA2T SPA2102 & a SPA9000 also a couple of PC's as well as an Asterix box all behind that router, will keep looking we know have some external logging so we should be able to see more info now, if you can retest and we will take a look at the log results when it's failing

Well I'm puzzled; I'm quite sure it's a Dynalink router issue. I put a D-Link in it's place and this could not replicate this issue. Still haven't found a consistent setup of the few times the VFX will come back online. The only consistent thing is VFX not coming back online without a router reboot. I have replicated this at home and my customer's site with both RTA1025W & RTA1320. Not sure why you cannot get this setup to fail on your tests. Maybe I should drop in to see you guys later this week with my gear and see if we can make it fail.

Quite happy for that to occur Fraser...not being able to reproduce the issue is frustrating for us as well as we believe you are seeing the issue so would like to be able to resolve it one way or the other....+ we like to go that extra mile for valued Customers

Generic answer, not necessarily specific to Fraser's problem: Sometimes the problam can be resolved by resetting the router to defaults and configuring only what you need (as opposed to the things you have played around with). Also, after upgrading the firmware the settings might be corrupted. I have had that a few times, before, where settings are stored slightly differently between firmware versions but not different enough to produce significant problems.

I have a brand new RTA1320 with a problem, the Ethernet port (not the rest of the modem) overheats after about 10 minutes of use and I get errors on the Ethernet comms. Works perfect when using USB. This is a manufacturer's fault, I am about to send it back for replacement. You do get manufacturing faults, and perhaps this is the problem you are having.

On my Linksys WRTP54G I have the problem that if I unplug the WAN cable and plug it back in within about 5 seconds, the modem detected the line was dropped but the router does not detect it. In that case I have to manually renew the DHCP assigned address via the router's web server. Perhaps this is the problem you are having, since you have the problem with 2 different modems. Rebooting the modem will force DHCP renewal, so try doing it manually from the Linksys.

Seems that Dynalink have had a few problems with firmware versions. I had the same problem (dropping out every 20mins) on my dynalink rta1335, borrowed a friends same which seemed to solve the problem, but only tested it for 10 hours. Mine was on version 3.29u, the friends was on 3.28q. I found that last week Dynalink listed a new firmware, 3.30j, and I have loaded that for a trial and have just had 36 hours before the VFX line was dropped for the first time. I have a simple network, a PC, an airport wireless with printer & PC and the Sipura.

Thanks to Fraser who visted us today, we identified an issue which with his particular setup and router that we could not reproduce within our network, using his setup the issue appears exactly as he described it,

The issue looks to be related to DHCP assignment / nating on the Dynalink, we will be looking at the problem and will advise when we have a resolution, Customers with Static IP's on their DSL will not experience the issue.

I think the dynalink 1320 doesn't clear the internatl nat table when the external PPP goes down like every other router I have used does, because when PPP drops and comes back up, we still have SSH and other connections open, whereas every other router I have used has closed them as soon as PPP goes down. If your IP changes, then yeah, that will really screw things up.

UPDATE: Thanks to CoffeeBaron again for bringing this to our attention, we believe the issue is isolated at this stage to the Dynalink range of routers and will effect automatic recovery of any SIP device using UDP when the DSL renews with a new IP address from the ISP.

The problem appears to be clearing down of the internal Nating tables for UDP with the Dyanlinks.

In simple terms the VFX device will not automatically reconect after a loss of DSL as the Router comes up with a new Ip address and then dosn't let the SIP UDP packets out or in

We have a couple of options to resolve this if people do have the Dynalink Range of products and are getting this issue,
1. If the user is on a Static IP the issue is not observed
2. The issue does not effect TCP traffic so a config change can be made.

At this point we have raised the issue directly with Dynalink and they are now looking at it.

NOTE: We believe this only effects the Dynalink series of routers.

Any update on this issue yet? I have managed to get the loss of service down to 2 times a day by updating the modem to the latest firmware and resetting all defaults, but this is not going to work for the primary purpose I want this service for.

Hi John,

The issue is with DynaLink at present, we do have a work around that can take of the problem with the Dynalink though, if you PM your VFX details , We will make the change, you can then test it by disconnecting your DSL line and reconnecting it, The Device should then reestablish , the issue is DynaLink specific problem effecting only this range of routers, they are looking at the issue now and we are waiting for a update from them.

Hi John,

We have applied a static IP to your account until we are able to get further diagnosis regarding this issue from dynalink.. currently they have advised us that they are investigating the issue, but this should resolve your fault for now.. please test and advise.
