freitasm: That's because New Zealand mobile networks are way ahead of what you can get in the USA, both in terms of coverage and speed. We are a lucky bunch here in New Zealand with Vodafone, Telecom and 2degrees offering a mobile service that is pretty good.

I've only been to the US once (San Francisco last year), and I was quite surprised by how bad, in terms of both speed and reliability, my mobile experience was over there. Upon advice of my hotel concierge, I purchased a pre-pay sim from T-Mobile. Next time I'll try another operator.

We have used T-Mobile multiple times same result as you, very average. I had a much better connection using one of the Verizon MVNO's.

Do you mean AT&T? Verizon is a CDMA carrier (Tho they have some LTE now)
sbiddle: T-Mobile is terrible in the US. ajobbins have me his SIM card to use last year after he visited but I don't recall him warning me how bad the experience would actually be!

networkn:DjShadow: Pitty that prepay misses out on this also
Well for those of us who pay considerably more on post pay accounts, I entirely disagree. The vast majority of promos that telcos offer are to prepay making us people who pay a lot monthly feel sad.

freitasm: It will work on any network. If you are in Sydney and roaming on Telstra it will be the same as if you were on Vodafone.
They initial coverage is basically AU/UK/US plus a bunch of Western Europe countries. Other countries will be added as it goes.

Why not offer it to prepay if they have enough money on their account?? Seems a bit of a class system running here.
