The first basic step would be to post the sites so others can check.

As mentioned above issues with the cache have become infamous over the years - but after checking with a couple of people yesterday it seems nobody has been encountering any issues in the last few weeks.

Ok, here are some URLs. Can people in Wellington using cable check them a couple of times to see if they have issues bringing them up? In theory the page load will hang until it times out, and it will then have a second go and get it. In saying that, people might get lucky...

fluxmedia.co.nz
digicake.com
24thousand.com
monkey101.co.nz

That should be enough to hopefully replicate the issue.

All of these loaded for me, however they hung for approx 30 seconds before they did.  Now when I click any of the sites they responds instantly, weird.

Yup that's exactly the problem, the first attempt will effectively fail and you will see it reload (you won't see an error message though). Upon reload after 30 seconds you'll get the site. It will work well for about 5-10 minutes (sometimes more), however once it goes out of your browser's cache (I'm assuming) it will then do the fail thing again. Can you try using another browser and see if it happens again?

Yep tried fluxmedia in firefox this time (vs Opera) and it took 44.59sec to load the site, now its responding normally in the browser, and in all browsers.  For clarity, visit in Firefox 44 seconds, then immediately use Opera, Chrome and IE and it loads instantly.

Looks to me like a whole bunch of these "GET /webpagethumbnail?c=63&d=https://www.facebook.com/&r=4&s=140:80&a=_nETgVaBinHu50KyYAN_UB97-bo HTTP/1.1" are slowing down the initial page display for flux media.

More an issue of site optimisation - looks like a social plugin of some sort. Tidying all that up is in the pipeline, but in any case it doesn't explain why ~80-100 sites in this IP range are failing their initial load on cable.

Thanks for checking - it's driving me crazy, I can't figure out if it's an issue with the IP range (Sydney) or WebDrive who provide my nameserver services. I don't suppose there are any Vodaclear guys on the forum who can take a look?

Nope.

Ultimately the cause is something on those sites is clearly causing an issue with the transparent proxy and something that's being served from a CDN. Changing the DNS gets around it because it won't give the same results for lookups for some CDN content.

I'm sure Vodafone will argue something on the site is broken which is causing this issue, and ultimately it's going to be up to you to convince them otherwise.

Yeah could be difficult... and I suppose it makes no difference to them that it works perfectly with every other ISP in the world :(

Which doesn't mean the ISP is at fault. There is clearly a combination of code on the sites and the cache causing the issue. Who's at fault? That's not a simple question to answer.

K, thanks for the advice. I'll do some testing this weekend and see if I can identify the exact issue - at least on my end.
