Hi all,

Ok, let me start off with saying that I'm aware Vodafone has acknowledged the DNS issues that have been plaguing my cable connection for the last 12 months. They even admitted it after about 10 emails to them (shock horror!).

Anyway, to counter this I'm using OpenDNS (also used Google's public DNS for a bit).

Here's the thing though, I have about 80-100 domains registered with WebDrive, and every single one of them will almost all of the time fail to resolve on the first attempt (time out) and then get it on the second attempt DESPITE me using OpenDNS. When I do an nslookup from my computer, it resolves every time.

What on earth is going on? Is VF attempting to resolve my domains first anyway through a local cache or something? It's driving me crazy. In fact, even when I have the domains and their IPs listed in my local hosts file, they STILL fail to resolve the first time. Obviously I've checked other ISPs and there are no issues.

I'm really confused here. I won't post the URLs yet as I'm not sure if it's against forum rules.

Really can't be bothered bringing this up with VF again... the first person didn't even know what a DNS was.

I've been out of the country for 2 weeks so can't comment on recent issues, but certainly hadn't seen any of their DNS and/or transparent proxy issues since around mid July.

Are you sure the issue isn't your setup?

I think so, here are some points anyway:

1) Affects all devices on network
2) If a particular device uses a VPN it connects without error to these sites
3) Router settings: Subnet mask 225.225.225.0, default gateway 203.96.147.1, DNS1 208.67.222.222, DNS2 208.67.220.220, DNS3 0.0.0.0

Likely ICMP packets being dropped or de-prioritized.

nothing to be concerned about really.

you look pretty consistent other than that.

The problem remains though... I've got 80-100 sites I basically can't access. And adding them to my local hosts file doesn't help. I've resorted to tethering 4G to make changes to the sites

If adding to your local hosts file does not help, its not a dns issue at all.

likely your issue is the infamous TC/VF Cable Proxy..

Part of the reason I've been scratching my head about this. It has the hallmarks of shoddy DNS but doesn't make any sense given a local host entry doesn't help.

Could you tell me the short version re this cable proxy issue? Is there a workaround?

as im not on cable, or vodafone for that matter..

i can only go off what has been written and talked about on GZ.

What DNS was configured in your router before? Vodafone cable users should have

--- 203.97.78.43
--- 203.97.78.44

And moved to correct subforum (why wasn't this created in the Vodafone subforum to start?)

Yep those were the default. I also tried the old PD ones, VF's DSL ones, and Google Public. In any case it sounds like this cable proxy thing is the issue.

It would suggest you post in the forum for the ISP you are currently with.
