The one thing that does seem certain is that Voda's "thunder" was stolen by the line on Friday...

So won't exactly be an earth shattering revalation if the broadband offer they talked about is the "big news".

Like Antonios, I believe there is a risk that the whole market bottoms out in a bad way if the competition is driven to absurd price points etc.

I think we have a very interesting 24 months ahead of us....

sbiddle: I didn't mean it in that sence - I meant that it won't be difficult for TCL to poach quite a few of their big corporate customers back. There are some who are very unhappy about what has gone on and will be happy to go back to a single provider. I'm sure Vodafone will be trying their best to keep them since they can now offer business lines but they can't offer a full package of services like TCL can.

Having worked for two organisations that use TCL for all telecom services and resold Vodafone for mobile, I can attest to the benefits of one provider. If TCL want to poach those mobile customers back from Vodafone once this new reselling agreement comes into effect they are going to have to overcome the roaming issues that TNZ has and also the lack of corporate based e-mail like Blackberry (somebody correct me if I am wrong that corporate Blackberry service is not available on TNZ at the moment?). And of course replace lots of handsets!

When TNZ gets their GSM network going, that will be a different story.

Personally I have all TCL service at home and also a TCL resold phone from Vodafone. I certainly would not change to a TNZ cellphone for integrated billing until at least they had a GSM network since I travel enough to make seamless roaming a necessity.

Back on topic. I really do wonder about these 1Gb broadband deals (what Vodafone are offering) Does anyone know someone that uses one and does not go over?

At least it is one that does not charge for over use just cut the line back to 64k. It will be interesting to see if Telstra respond.

Third mobile service provider coming soon

Telecom and TelstraClear today announced the signing of a commercial agreement that will allow TelstraClear to provide a new nationwide mobile service.

The agreement will see TelstraClear launch its own TelstraClear mobile service later this year, providing a unique range of mobile services, bundles and prices via the Telecom network.

The agreement was signed this morning by Telecom acting CEO Simon Moutter and TelstraClear Chief Executive Dr Allan Freeth.

Dr Freeth says the agreement is great for customers, enabling choice without the need to build a new mobile network.

"Our customers can look forward to a unique TelstraClear service, with new TelstraClear branded handsets, bundles and pricing plans that are different to those offered by other players today," says Dr Freeth.

"The fact that Telecom and TelstraClear can come to a commercial agreement like this is something that will really benefit customers, and quickly."

Telecom acting CEO Simon Moutter says the agreement is also a positive move for the wider telecommunications industry.

"This is an example of individual providers working together effectively to ensure best outcomes for customers," says Mr Moutter.

TelstraClear will launch its new mobile service later this year, with details provided closer to the time.

The service will mean customers can enjoy the benefits of a single bill from one provider delivering all their voice, data and mobile services.

Could this be the main reason as to why TCL abandoned their Unplugged concept in Tauranga? Seeing that the talk of this deal must have started a good few months ago, probably near the end of finishing building Unplugged concept, and during the round when TCL and Vodafone were having a fall-out?!

Internet is my backyard...

Excellent. And it sounds like they've got a full MVNO deal happening. Can only be good!

I assume they'll focus on high-value business customers, but it'll be interesting to see whether or not they introduce consumer plans as well (including prepaid). Their target market might fit in nicely with NZC who will probably focus on the cheap end of the market.

The only problem TCL have is that many of their key accounts are trans tasman businesses who need roaming in Australia. Until Telecom's GSM network is launched this will be quite a limiting issue with only a single dual mode handset.

I believe we'll ultimately see TCL launch a seamless mobile plan offering the same pricing in NZ and Aussie with no roaming charges. People might consider that idea to be crazy but in a competitive marketplace what better way to make yourself stand out that offering a product that only Vodafone can offer and they're not interested in doing that.

Of course, not everyone thinks Telstra will be able to switch off when they say they will (not that that will affect their arrangements with their trans tasman customers). Perhaps they'll use dual mode phones CDMA/UMTS phones with Telstra sim cards.

No, it sounds perfectly sensible. It's a differentiator that noone else will probably be able to copy. But will they have the courage to do it?

I think TCL/Telstra be wise to offer a single pricing for trans-tasman calls and no-roaming charges between ANZ as mentioned by Sbiddle, I totally agree with TinyTim and Sbiddle with this idea. I'd probably go as far as changing/converting my family to use TCL with their GSM/HSDPA services if all of this is going well.

And on TCL's site, it seems they will be branding selected (Number Portability) handsets.

It also seems to be hinting that we will see the HTC Mogul in NZ some time soon!

I also wounder if this agreement may enable Telecom to get some good will out of TelstraClears parent company, Telstra to delay the CDMA shut down in Aussie?

This is silly, on TCL's Business > Mobile site where you can enter your contact information for any update... I got an error for "Please correct the following missing or invalid fields: Mobile phone number" when my phone number is 6-digits long!?

I had to go ahead with that form without entering my cellphone number.
