Transparent proxy poked again? Browsing great through the VPN tunnel, many international sites timing out without VPN.

I am prone to getting this message - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v608/steviet/website_zps69ec98e8.jpg - when trying to visit Google.co.nz. It happens not just in the morning, but at times throughout the day. Could it be related to the proxy problem?

I'm a long term Telstra Cable user 15/2 speed, over the last couple of weeks access to local websites has been abysmal, accessing Stuff and the Herald has been terrible you can almost make a cup of tea while you wait for the site to open, often the browser will be unable to find the site and many times the site appears as a string of text rather than a normal site.  I have looked through Geekzone and sort of concluded the issue is related to DNS issues, have checked my DNS setting and am using 203.97.78.43 and 44 which appear to be correct, using a speedtest the performance of the link is 14.59 Meg down and 2.09 Meg up.

All websites are slow to load but local sites have always been fast.  Is this a Voda issue ?? and will it go away when they complete the upgrade referred to in this thread?

I have been having issues loading Twitter, I have to change my DNS to google's one but that doesn't always work. I imagine JohnR will come here and say "Issues may happen due to the planned upgrade of the network, these upgrades are planned to be finished soon."

You mention local what about international and how do you determine a local website?

As I understand the most recent upgrades are completed

Will these upgrades do anything to reduce international latency? I have noticed on the truenet tests over the past year that cables international latency is way higher than VDSL and ADSL.

The upgrade work was to the Cable (HFC) network not related to international in anyway, These are 2 different things

Will there be any upgrades done to improve latency in the near future? Cable isn't looking to good at the moment.

Hi Johnr, good point re local or international.  One often thinks that NZ companies are hosted locally but the sites I mentioned are stateside, so could be many things.  Performance is an issue however wherever the site is hosted and identifying where the issue is (network or site) is a challenge.

We've had problems since September. I rang to report the problems a few times and went through the "not using WiFi or router and still get problems" routine. I was eventually told that my problems would be fixed by 21 October. It is not clear that they have all been fixed but it is much better than it was.

I'll wait until the upgrades are all completed and see what happens then.

It is the one thing that is stopping me from moving from Spark to Vodafone - I can deal with the fact that there isn't a single way to manage all accounts from a single login but the persistent issues with the cable network doesn't really give me the confidence to take the plunge.

Does that mean a 200Mbps plan will be announced soon?
