GEOMAX: The commerce commission has nothing to do with setting specific plans. They only set the wholesale price that the access is charged at - by Telecom to the ISP. The ISP then adds costs for internet traffic and ISP services, and comes up with a final plan price.

I think you answered your own question.....the retail price is based on the wholesale price plus costs and margins so the determinations are very relavent. cheers George

I would change to this in a shot if WxC allowed Asterisk support on VFX. Sadly, I'm beginning to think this day might never come though! :(

This will be slightly off topic , yes it is taking a while Will but for good reason I'm afraid and it's all to do with security Asterisk is great you can control whatever you want and there lies the problem we hjave to think of the larger impact and there are a lot of not so nice people that will look to exploit any hole they can, security around VoIP offerings has to be water tight, Asterisk can break a lot of those rules, In saying that we do support Asterisk on commercial apps and actually have a number of these now , it's just not ready at a user level, We are still comitted to supporting it Will it's just not as quick as I would like....Cry

Hi Phil I take it that the 69.95 package is for a basic dsl service with no 40 or 90 kbps enhancements. I am looking forward to seeing all your packages you are offering

The competition will be up there soon - I really would like to go with WxC but people like Orcon will have their own stuff out very shortly - and from what I hear they will be supporting Asterisk. Any rough rough rough timeframe at all?

Yep Orcon might be but the issue is like all new players they actually don't have any experience in the VOIP world or as a a full Telco, turning on a switch is reasonably easy but customizing SIP to work with everything is a little bit harder when supporting centrex services as well, knowing the Siemens switch (Highpass) direct descendant of the EWSD it won't be that easy to make the switch easily configurable but good luck to them, where we have been doing nothing but VOIP switching for almost 5 years now so we have a few miles under the bridge , Will you also have to understand that security is big concern and one of our prime focuses, just letting SIP devices connect with out looking at the bigger security picture will actually put you as a customer at risk of fraud. Some providers have been hacked in NZ already and it comes down to poor security practices.

http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/netw/C8900A01F2C6E169CC25733A00051191

So it comes down to the fact we won't be supporting products that can compromise customers, we will leave that to others who may be after the fast buck without thinking about the security responsibilities.

lastly and with my final breath for this Friday (Long Long week...Thanks for that outage on Tuesday btw Telecom  Laughing) if I give a time frame and don't meet it you guys will hang me  but best guess will be early next year Will.....I'm done Wink

thanks Phil :) I understand the risk - it's just that my current VFX service is so aweome I'm frustrated I can't bring more of my stuff over too! But hopefully it's in the not-too-distant future :)

willnz: In regards to your asterisk compatibility with VFX

I have been investigating using asterisk at home, instead of putting in this aria 28 i have spread over my lounge floor.

I didnt even think of using the voip connectivity of asterisk for a trunk line. I was auctually going to use a compatible voice modem, and plug it into a voip<->analog gateway such as one listed on xnet's website. Maybe this would work for you?
Do those gateway's relay the caller id for an analog phone with caller id attached? I think asterisk would be able to pick up on that signal if so.

I am also thinking it would be good to get a gsm gateway and connect it to the asterisk box as a trunk line, and have the family's cellphones in on the team talk plan so we get cellular extensions (I think its possible) and free local calling by phoning into the asterisk box, then out the voip trunk off through xnet into the telecom exchange.

I dont know too much about asterisk but have seen some of the stuff people are doing with it and am seriously thinking about setting up a box.

Hey does anyone know if I purchase a VFX line, can I connect to it from overseas, or does Xnet limit access by firewall to only NZ Customers???
If so then someone could call a local napier number, but the phone would ring at my sisters house in Australia at no extra cost above the ~$13/mo.

Hi Ray,

I do currently have my Linksys ATA connected to my asterisk box at the moment for VFX. And yes, Caller ID does work :)

I was also considering a GSM gateway and TalkZoneZero - but GSM gateways are pretty costly (even for a single port one).

Yes, you can get a VFX line in NZ and use it overseas. You just have to have a Napier address for a Napier number.

Maverick,

I move house in 2.5 weeks and I really don't need a landline, Naked Bitstream would be ideal. I realise you can't be too specific about dates, costs, etc, but do you think it's worth me holding on for Naked DSL or are the chances of a product being available in that timeframe slim? I will be gutted if I end up paying Telecom to setup the line in the new house and then get it cut-off in same week!

Thanks for your help.

Jon.
