How it go?
I'm keen to get my VFNZ prepaid number onto a contract plan, so it'd be great to hear how you get on with this.

jesseycy: Right guys, leave it up to me!

Since it "theoritically works", I'll give it a try......

#1: Hope to get a cheap telecom mobile (number portability enabled), failing that, I'll buy a Nokia 2865....

#2: Go on Telecom Prepaid, or a Anytime Plan, both of which have no contract terms...

#3: Use Telecom for a month, and then swap to Vodafone On Account "Mega Plan"....

Fingers crossed it all goes well! I'll try it in a week or so.... Meanwhile in Hong Kong, I'll enjoy Tech heaven....

I've just bought a Telecom Phone on Trademe last week....  Using up my Vodafone prepay credit now....

BUT.....  I've just got news that Vodafone is having a upgrade from Oct 11th, which will affect number portability out of Vodafone all the way till Oct 25th!

Which means:

#1:  I'll execute my "plan" after Oct 25th

#2:  Maybe the upgrade would involve enabling swapping of numbers from VFNZ Prepay to VFNZ Account???

I have the outage from 12am 11th to 12pm 15th...  and then it takes 24 hours minimum.  And don't forget clearing all the massive backlogs...  LOL

Hey guys, an update if you're still interested....

After buying a Pantech 1000c phone from Trademe, making sure it's a number portable handset (basically a phone with software that allows it to be programmed for phone numbers of more than 10 numbers).......

Brought it to Telecom today.  Hooked it up to Telecom Prepay.  No problem.  Very good service, and very knowledgable lady representative at the Auckland Sylvia Park shop.

So, it's to be ported successfully either tommorow morning, or by Tue morning (extended because of labour day).  I'll give it a week or 2 then, and then bringing it to Vodafone On Account.

On a side note though...  I have spoken with 2 "vodafone direct reps" (not the digital mobile or first mobile salespersons).  One at the Auckland Queen St branch told me no problem, as long as I'm bring a 021 number and it's from Telecom.  On the other hand though, another at the Sylvia Park branch said that the Vodafone billing system does not allow them to do this, as certain set numbers "must" be allocated and remains on the Prepay side......

Who's correct?  I'll find out soon enough....  Hopefully the Queen St guy....

Hiya,

First Mobile employee here, in my experience, a colleague in my store was asked by a customer (who coincidentally was a TNZ employee!) to port his 'ported' Telecom 021 (originally VF Prepay) number to VF On-Account.  When consulted, I told my colleague that I didn't believe it could be done, as Siebel (VF Billing system) would recognise the number as being in the Prepay range.  She informed the customer that we would attempt the port for him, but in no circumstances could, or would we guarantee that this process was possible for us.  The customer wasn't exactly happy with this, however agreed that we can 'only but try...'.  Try, we did, and our porting system repeatedly rejected the port-request as "the number was not in an approved state".  After speaking to someone in-the-know, they confirmed that no, at this stage, it is not possible to do.  End result?  Customer kept his 021 number on TNZ Prepay and continued with his new On-Account connection, just with a new (and better...) 021 number...

Obviously, if anyone has had experience contrary to mine, I am VERY eager to hear it...

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Richie

Well, I do hope my experience would be different!  Better On Account mobile number doesn't necessarily mean I want to inform all my friends (and some whom I don't contact too often) a change to my mobile number...

Just to be on the safe side, I cancelled all Add-Ons...  And I'll give it a week or so, and hopefully, my number could be "flushed" out of the Vodafone billing system entirely...

Additional note:  My number has been successfully ported to Telecom today.  Receiving calls and txt on my Telecom mobile.  Replies from "300" to check which network it's on reveal that my number is on Telecom....

HOWEVER, I can still send txt and call my bestmate successfully using my Vodafone.....  GREAT!

Can you STILL txt and call from your Vodafone mobile?? From my experience, it is not unusual for this to happen, but usually only for a few hours, a day max, following the transition...

Cheers

Update:

Phone calls (bestmate or not), sms, not being sent.  Every call is replied automatically by "that number is inactive or not in use" (which is kinda misleading).  But nevertheless, I guess they finally cut the connection today.  Data has also been "cut", mgmaps can't use data transfer anymore.

BUT, Vodafone Live is still active, as with Vodafone email.  So I'm still happily churning away emails with no credit at all on my phone.....  :)

As for telecom, I got 2 "dropped/missing" Txt.  Hope that's only an initial thing.  (How does number portability work here anyway?  "True number portability", or just a "call divert" scheme like the initial days in Singapore and some other countries??

Telecom confirms though that everything is good and active on their side anyway.

Finally.  Brought it to a First Mobile store, to "swap back" to Vodafone On Account Mega.  Guy there assured me that it's no problem, "quote: lots of people do it".  Good hope yet!  I'll have to wait about 2 days, for "credit proofing".

THEN, I'll be able to conclude with results.

RIGHT, Final Update.....

In a nutshell....  NO, you can't port a number from Vodafone Prepay > Telecom > Back to Vodafone On Account.

Guy at First Mobile store finally called me today, and told me that he's very sorry, but the "porting team" can't do it.  Insists that they were able to before though (which I have serious doubts about).  And he told me that the porting team said that by the end of the year, they'll be able to swap Prepay numbers to On Account directly.

All in all..  I'm stuck with Telecom now then...  Better not let my mates find out that my 021 number is now Telecom... :P  "Number Portabilty" here in NZ...  SO inconvinent and backwards!  It's a much much easier process in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and the UK.

It's been years that vodafone have being saying that its not long till you can take your prepay number to a plan, Holding your breath is not a good idea, since they have had 2 billing upgrades and still cant offer this much requested feature.

What I really don't get though.....

Marketing aside, technically, THIS IS a real simple thing to do!  What's stopping Vodafone?

If it's as some users speculated (and the 'official' Vodafone statement), that the billing system automatically recognises it as a "Prepay number", why not just delete the number from their Prepay database, wait a day, then load it on again as a new On Account number the other day?

I doubt that more than 200 users port their numbers everyday, doing this small extra task will take a staff member half an hour at the most....

Venturing a guess here, I would say that the task would be much more complex than just deleting a single number.

If I understand it correctly, there are ranges of numbers which are post and prepaid, which cannot be mixed up at the moment. I could be completely wrong however.

Just a last word here....

I do wish Vodafone clear this issue up with their own staff. I was at a store today with a friend, and the salesperson encouraged me to switch my number from Telecom.... When informed it was a 021 number, he once again told me it was no problem....

Likewise, on Vodafone's website.....

Quoted: "Number portability is the ability to switch to a different service provider, and keep your existing mobile number, including the prefix e.g. 021, 029 or 027. All New Zealand mobile service providers now offer number portability."

No, it's not the case!

Fair Go?
Nothing gets corporations moving than a bit of negative media attention, and the worse case scenario is they may actually better train all frontline staff and tidy up the inaccuracies of their website.

With your well documented exercise I am sure it would be will received.
