yitz: Yeah in those stats the noise margin is jumping all over the place... not good... I had the same symptoms with a corroded joint at a jack point.

And that's exactly what the problem was. Chorus arrived this morning and sorted it out. Good call yitz.

OrphanAnnie: I called Vodafone back a little while ago and they have booked a callout for Chorus so it will be fixed. jonb, you are right. My line maintenance fee does cover internal wiring too so that was a nice surprise. Thanks for your help everyone.

No but the line crackling got fixed. I asked the guy from Chorus about a master filter and he didnt think it would make much difference to the speed. Our exchange is still on adsl1 and he said there are no plans at all to upgrade it. He said if it did, it wouldnt be that noticeable.
