timmmay: Cable works, and it's reliable. I had it for years and it was fine. When anything goes wrong support can be very slow to answer and sometimes you have to resort to social media to get things fixed. This is one reason I left.

Cable doesn't work in a power cut, it relies on pole mounted repeaters. Disaster proofing is another reason I left. Of course you need a UPS to use your internet in a power cut anyway.

TC cable was weird routing, so connecting to Australia sites has pings that can be higher >100ms, they should be around 35ms. This is another reason I left.

If you can get UFB, get it. If you can get VDSL, that's a tough one. If you want a connection that's usually reliable, goes out during power outages, and can tolerate customer service that ranges from sometimes pretty good through to worst-of-breed, then go for cable.

If I couldn't get UFB I'd consider cable again, but I'd consider VDSL alongside it.

Cheers for that info. The best we can get with any other ISP is standard ADSL, so everything considered I think VF cable is the way to go.

Two years ago I moved from ADSL in Auckland to VF cable 100/10 Mbps unlimited in Wellington.
No regrets.
Like going from an old Morris Minor to a new BMW.
Reliable and I get 95% of advertised (local) speeds 95% of the time.
Pings: 8 ms Wellington, 18 ms Auckland, 44 ms Sydney.

PS VF customer support is legendary (not in a good way) but I have had no need to use it (yet).
Although the cable service is good, don't rush in to cable Sky - grossly overpriced - I'm leaving when my Sky contract expires.

If all you can get is ADSL2+ or Cable then Cable is a far better option. It is just unfortunate that it is Vodafone cable. Your bill will most certainly be wrong 9 times out of 10.

However, Cable itself works very well. Speeds are good. Seems quite reliable so far. Much much better than 10Mbps ADSL.

Garden Road, Northland. Found an old Telstra map from 2011 and it doesn't show cable running down it... Really hope we can get it, going to book the installation in tomorrow.

We're really happy with our cable connection with Vodafone. On Ethernet we're getting 48-49 Mbps consistently.

VF Cable Good, Vodafone billing and support very very bad. Don't under any circumstances take on Vodafone TV though, just not worth the aggro.

if you have to choose between ADSL or VF cable the choice is obvious take the cable it's excellent.

Well if you visit the property look on the poles. The ugly black cable will be your service :-)

Most of central wellington was cabled out, with the odd exception, Kelburn and Northland especially because of all the students. Many houses were connected by previous owners/tennants, so you'll find it's probably just a quick site check and reactivation.

Get it if you can - despite the customer service stuff, the actual service is pretty bang on and high performing.

So just got some very bad news. We can't get cable as they don't do new installs anymore.

The properties on either side can get cable since the cable is already installed (just needs a ground drop), but in our case there's nothing.

ADSL for at least 2 more years :-(

I think it might just be too pricey. The rep said now that the government is supporting the Chorus fibre roll out, they don't get funding for cable installations anymore.

I would pay for the install!

? I don't believe they ever got funding for cable installations from the Government anyway. Sounds a bit fishy to me.

Are you saying that VF are no longer doing installs on their HFC Network period? if so their Website does not reflect this and surely they would have made some sort of press statement about that.

So I called up again, just thought I'd give it one last shot.. We now have a cable installation booked! Going to hold off getting too excited before its actually up and running.

The customer rep was initially unsure so she put me on hold to speak to a supervisor, but was then given the go ahead.
