Hi

We are moving to a new house in Northland and the Chorus map says the best we can get is broadband > 10mb.

Then I came across Vodafone cable (which I previously had never heard of being from Auckland) and it seems to give the option of ultrafast broadband. Does anyone know where I can find a map of cable coverage? The address checked told me to ring customer care (currently on hold....).

Also any comments on how good the Vodafone cable experience is?

Cheers

Was only on hold for 20 minutes! The rep was very helpful. Sounds like we can get ultrafast broadband 100/10 with free modem and connection on 12 month contract.

And I was getting ready to go back to ADSL speeds... Vodafone you'll have a new customer in February!

You should put the jug on, you're going to be there awhile.

EDIT: Just saw your other comment, 20 minutes is quick.

If the property is already cabled, that's a bonus.

Also - I found this address checker on their site. TCL used to have a map, but I would hazard a guess that's long gone now.

UFB > Cable > VDSL > ADSL

The only real issue is that Vodafone have some fairly well documented support issues at the moment, and they are pretty notorious at stuffing up your bill :-)

Yep, this was what I tried using earlier. Its a tad buggy, sometimes saying UFB is available and sometimes it says the best we can get is ADSL.

Hopefully the customer rep's confirmation was right.

We will just be getting a basic naked broadband package (no sky etc) so hopefully billing can handle it :-)

They also have a two month free sign up bonus! Pretty happy considering we only had VDSL in Auckland.

Lias has pretty well summed it up. The forums seem to have lots of complaints re Vodafone

My Vodafone VDSL is performing better than my cable did.

I would take VDSL/fibre over cable any day of the week, but I have a strong dislike for anything ex-TCL (I worked there, unfortunately).

Cable works, and it's reliable. I had it for years and it was fine. When anything goes wrong support can be very slow to answer and sometimes you have to resort to social media to get things fixed. This is one reason I left.

Cable doesn't work in a power cut, it relies on pole mounted repeaters. Disaster proofing is another reason I left. Of course you need a UPS to use your internet in a power cut anyway.

TC cable was weird routing, so connecting to Australia sites has pings that can be higher >100ms, they should be around 35ms. This is another reason I left.

If you can get UFB, get it. If you can get VDSL, that's a tough one. If you want a connection that's usually reliable, goes out during power outages, and can tolerate customer service that ranges from sometimes pretty good through to worst-of-breed, then go for cable.

If I couldn't get UFB I'd consider cable again, but I'd consider VDSL alongside it.

My favourite cable problem was caused by rats chewing through the insulation causing intermittent outages.
