Ok, sky siad yes the older digital decoders will opperate still, the only thing that won't function any more is the ability to book moveis, interactive TV, upgrading, adding channells, ect, because they all require a phiscal phone connection, all these will have to be done manually.

It's a lot different to Aussie, I work for an aussie ISP and none of these things will work with out a physcial phone connection to a Telco, but Naked DSL is taking off over there now, we were the first ISP in Aussie to launch Naked DSL, with in the first week of lanuching it we had just over 900 customers signing up for it, were about a month into it now and have around 2500 customers on Naked DSL and about another 1500 still waiting to be connected to Naked DSL.
The difference between Aussie and NZ Naked DSL is we run on ADSL1 and Aussie only run it on ADSL2+ which isn't available Aussie wide yet.
But there's still going to be downfalls on either product, Nakded DSL is easier to trouble shoot 97% of the no sync on Naked DSL is caused by either something happening at the exchange, or between the ISP and the exchange as we have witnessed in Aussie so far with Naked DSL.

But the faster NZ rolls out Naked DSL the better, actually the faster xnet rolls out Naked DSL the happier I'll be :)

excellent! That's just answered my next question. Thought I was gonna have to get a Telecom line just so Sky would work properly, but seems it will be fine on Naked DSL Laughing

hoping the prices get announced soon...

Well Orcon, Slingshot and another ISP have alrealy launched Naked DSL but the price seems more expensive for less data, I'm with xNet and for the same thing on slingshot for naked DSl it's $79.95 with 6 Gigs half the data per month where as at the moment I'm paying $59.95 in total for 10 Gigs the 10 Gigs I never reach anyways so my bill is usually some where around $50-$55

Go to this link http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=65&TopicId=17426 and you will see for yourselves why xnet havent put their naked bitstream prices up on their website yet and the post is by Paul Clarkin himself. Their naked bitstream plans arent very far away now.

As far as I know it will actually work on VFX (a few people reporting it working), but I don't think it would be guarenteed.  Anyway, you are right in that Sky does not need a phone line to work.

Starspangle, this isn't very related to the thread, but it's driving me crazy...

Can you please verify that Orcon has naked dsl on offer?  I go to Orcon's webpage to check, and there's nothing!

Going back to ninjabear's original question, there is a potential problem with moving to a new location and hoping to start an NDSL connection from scratch. Slingshot, at least, are not yet able to provide that. You have to have a Telecom line running first and then switch over. I'm hoping that Xnet will be able to offer a service for new customers, but it's not clear yet. See my post and maverick's reply:

You still have to remember though that there is only a certian number of Telecom Exchanges being enbled for NSDL per quater, and you have to hope that your in one of thoses exchanges, if not you'll have to wait until your exchange has been upgraded.
If you can find a nice enough Tech working for GDC or Downer Engerneering who will tell you which Exchanges have been enabled so far and what one's are next.
When I had my phone line disconnected by Telecom a few days ago and my broadband ported to the wrong ISP, the telecom lady was nice enough to tell me it happened because they have some Tech's at the Ellerslie 4 Exchange upgrading it for NDSL, then I was fourtunate enough to have the Downer Engineering guy call me from the exchange and appologise for disconnecting my phone and broadband, but explained what he was doing there, 10 mins later my phone was connected again but the broadband was ported to the wrong ISP so he called me again to check everything was working which I said the phone is but the Broadband isn't, then he relised that he had connected a xtra customer to my port and me to theirs, but he fixed that.

Are you sure you are not confusing NDSL with LLU? NDSL (naked DSL - broadband without phone service), as far as I'm aware will be available anywhere DSL is.
LLU (local loop unbundling) is where ISP's can put their own equipment into the exchange and service your line themselves. This is what is being rolled out a few exchanges at a time.

NDSL/ULL is running through your own ISP equiptment or Telecom's equiptment depending on if your ISP can afford to put their own equiptment into the exchange, if not then they'll rent telecom's equiptment which means your NSDL may be a littile more in cost than the ISP who has their own Equiptment.
ULL is NDSL the only difference being your ISP will have their own Dslams and  be able to control your speed/data on ULL and not telecom.
This is exactly how Aussie is doing NDSL/ULL but their only doing it with ADSL2+ which is limited to certain ISP's including Telstra, those who can't get ADSL2+ due to PGS/RIM or their exchange not being enabled for BB2+ won't be able to get NDSL they will be stuck on ADSL1

It wouldn't actually surprise me if this criples telecom in a few years, maybe then they will sell AAPT and move their money back here and start fixing this network rather than Aussie's netowrk.
