willnz: EDIT: Technically MF, any port-in IS optional. Though I'd imagine ComCom would order companies to accept incoming ports if the major players didn't voluntarily comply.

Yes, I know. But I think it's cheeky of Vodafone NZ to hide behind a technicality to justify their modus operandi, seeing they already offer port in - just not for prepaid.

Mauricio, why do you think Vodafone is hiding behind anything? We've never said we can port in on prepay... we've made no secret of it. The Commission is now saying we have to and we will, by the deadline of April 1 2008. Nobody's hiding anything.

Honestly, I think you guys see conspiracy under every rock. There is no conspiracy. We weren't required to port in Prepay and we didn't. Now we are and we will. It's that simple.

PaulBrislen: What I'm saying is there are two levels of expectation here: what the ComCom asked for (port numbers OUT) and what you're expecting, (port numbers any which way). We have MET and will continue to meet the ComCom requirements.

As of April 1 next year we will be required to port Prepay numbers in and we will meet that.

Dude seriously, you are sounding like the Telecom of yesteryear, meeting only the bare minimum requirements under the law, claiming you are in the right, using lawyers to stall for time and find loopholes around the law to make more money in the short term.

I'm glad the government is taking you to task for this crap and winning, Vodafone are the only one in the room which read the act and said, oh, this only applies to post pay.

You make Telecom look like the honest guys - not a easy feat!!!

Why not spend you time working on something useful like fixing your billing system, I haven't had a correct bill since the pit stop, and have spend hours every month getting things fixed, instead of trying to defend a idiotic decision which you then lost in court with. The horse is dead, admit it and move on for heavens sake.

No conspiracy at all. When I read Number Portability I think any number to any service. Unless the systems weren't prepared. That's all.

Wasn't Vodafone just complaining last week that Telecom was following the letter of the law on unbundling exchanges, and you were complaining bitterly they were only doing the bare minimum to adhere to the law, and now the shoe is on the other foot...

I imagine Telecom's press release if written by Vodafone would read as follows :-)

What I'm saying is there are two levels of expectation here: what the ComCom asked for (unbundling exchanges) and what Vodafones expecting, (Telecom to not move to nodes). Telecom have MET and will continue to meet the ComCom requirements.

As of April 1 next year we will be required to unbundle sub-loop exchanges and we will meet that.

It would be nice for Vodafone to explain why it didn't allow prepaid port-ins in the first place...  Was it so their customers could not go from Vodafone post-paid to Vodafone prepaid?  Porting in Australia soon fixed that glitch...

i think it is quite obvious really, if you look at the situation they were in when number portability came in
1. their old prepay systems was having death spasms already
2. they werent able to actually port numbers on the april 1st deadline for post pay
3. they had a new prepay system on the way but not ready yet, this was definately shown when they had to bring in the new system early due to the old one finnaly giving up the go, and the first month of the new system just making a phone call and getting charged the right amount was hard.

they couldnt do it in time for the last deadline and so they found a hole

I find the situation quite amusing myself, though hardly surprising given the 'On account' experience. Must tie in with the You Choose contract experience (been there done that with my partner still insisting to keep her now openterm Choose 20 connection).

I know one poor user on Vodafone who has been through 4 number changes, prepaid -> on account -> prepaid -> on account... yet if you are on the competitors network, you can just go prepaid <--> on account without any issues or loss of number.

For users considering to port their number over to On account, it certainly seems a backwards step having to port your number to a competitors network and back again....

So to clarify with porting soon to be available from another network to VF prepaid - does that implicity mean that their own customers will STILL have to port away to Telecom and then back again just to change from prepaid to On Account and vice versa? Seems like a big rigmarole if this is so. However I dont think I have read that even this will be be possible or even permissable.

I wonder if there are assumptions that this will be the case. Surely it would be in VF best interest to simply allow prepaid to On Account or vice versa internally rather than making them jump accross. Some might find the $10 text grass a lot greener,

sbiddle:

You're not even interested in keeping your own prepay customers who have been abandoning Vodafone in droves to sign up with Telecom on account since they couldn't keep their number of account with VF.

Got some numbers to back that up?

Family friends that live in Reparoa purchased a Vodafone @ home unit,

The current provider is South power or South down power (not %100 sure of name)

What? Is this even a telco?

And really, if one pseudo telco doesn't do it, what's the impact on Vodafone, a company who aims to become the largest telco in the country?

The discussion here is why Vodafone offer port in for on account, but not port in for prepaid.

What other companies are not doing is irrelevant.

I think you have the wrong company name. SouthPower seems to be out of business, changed its name to Orion New Zealand. There's no telecommunications services on their pages.
