GSM will be around for ever. Globally we'll probably see lots of 3G networks shut down well before GSM.

I saw an article that said 2020 for Vodafone NZ. Can't find the link for it now. Some 3G networks in EU are being closed for 4G use of the bandwidth . AT&T in the US is shutting down GSM so that the frequencies can be used for LTE..

Most foreign networks don't have anywhere near the same amount of spectrum that NZ carriers do.

With 3.5GHz likely to be the next big LTE band that becomes commonplace Vodafone are well positioned to take advantage of this with all the spectrum they own. This is perfect for delivering high density solutions.

Don't all the smart power meters use GSM? If so I very much doubt it's going anywhere anytime soon.

SATTV: make sure the WIFI is set to TKIP only.
I have come across this before in a previous role when I moved the company form one ISP to another.
Ethernet is the way to go or as as coffee baron suggests if there is capability for an external antenna on the eftpos machine try that.

if you must us GPRS the only other way to improve signal is by a passive repeater. i.e. a high gain antenna outside pointing to cell tower and either a piece of leaky coax inside or another antenna inside like a car phone antenna. totally passive and may help, will cost a bit of money to do properly. you need good coax, good antennas and good connectors to make it work.

Well, I'm now looking into this idea of a passive repeater.

Does the 2G GPRS signal from Vodafone operate on 900MHZ or 1800MHZ?

900Mhz (although there may be the odd 1800 2G left, but I think they are now mostly 4G only).

IIRC, 2G is on both, but more normally on 900MHz and not often on 1800MHz now. 4G is on 1800MHz now (and 700MHz, and 2600MHz). 3G is on 900MHz too (as well as 2100MHz).

Still trying to figure out where the tower is so I can aim an antennae properly. Are the vodafone tower locations on Waiheke publicly available, or at least the general vicinity of them?

Hi, Just wondering if it is worth trying a 2 degrees sim. The reason I say this checking the 2 Degrees coverage map on the website show a consistent secondary coverage at Rocky Bay Waiheke where as Vodafone's coverage shows as patchy. Somebody else may be able to comment on the accuracy of the coverage maps but it is known that different operators coverage varies.

@johnr thanks...just looked.

The vodafone RBI tool maps shows our location with some coverage, but no increase or improvement to coverage even in the Final RBI stage. The reality is we currently have no coverage so even the map is not accurate.

@scheduler we have people at work who are on 2Degrees and they only get coverage in very limited areas and its really marginal, too
