JaniceL:
timmmay: I was tempted to post a tracert on Snap just to see what JohnR said, but decided against it ;)

I've noticed similar behavior on a corporate connection at work, which goes through Vodafone. I can also do diagnostics if I notice it happening, if someone tells me what to do.

In the corp network there could be other factors  that can contribute such as internal corp DNS, blocked sites, etc. It might be best to escalate that with your IT department first, they may have their preferred rules set in place.

They'd say 'get off the internet and do some work'.

JaniceL: For those google addresses (cse.google.com, cse.google.co.nz) Vodafone DNS will resolve to a Google CDN in VodafoneNZ and third party DNS in Australia will resolve to the Google CDN in Australia in your case in Sydney (30-40ms away). The same goes with the content served from Akamai (cdn.resignationmedia.com, i.crackedcdn.com) I suspect the stalling you experienced when you used Vodafone DNS was before the cable upgrades. Try changing to Vodafone DNS now and see if you still have issues.

I'll try using the Vodafone DNS more over the next few days to confirm that I still experience the issue, but you have to admit it begs some questions:
- Why would third party DNS servers and the Vodafone Cable DNS servers have the exact same issue before the cable upgrades, and not after?  This implies that Vodafone and the third party were using the same flawed routing, but Vodafone found better routing where the third party didn't.  Could be true but seems dubious.
- Similarly, why did this seem to only affect Vodafone Cable subscribers, and not subscribers to other Vodafone internet services (e.g. xDSL, mobile) or other ISPs?  Are we to assume that Vodafone Cable DNS routing in particular has been flawed this whole time?
-- And if Vodafone Cable DNS routing has been flawed this whole time, why has this issue only existed (to my knowledge) for the last few months instead of for the life of the network?

I don't expect answers to these questions of course, they're just "food for thought".  I just don't want the issue to be prematurely dismissed as a DNS server issue because, at this point, I don't think it is one... but I will endeavour to replicate the issue using Vodafone DNS servers just the same.

They may have the same symptom (slow) but may not be caused by the same thing. No one is dismissing anything here. If you eliminate the congestion and still have this issue, we make sure you are using the recommended DNS address. If you are already using the correct Vodafone Cable DNS and still have the same issue,  we can proceed to the next steps. The impact of 3rd party DNS on CDN performance is a known issue, you can google a few articles if you want more details.

It may or may not be related, but I've had incredibly similar issues with YouTube ever since the congestion issues on cable were resolved. It'll sit there for sometimes minutes on end, just stuck at "Connecting...". When it finally starts the video, everything's peachy, but there's frequently a massive delay before it gets to that point.

My flatmates are seeing that same behaviour, and I've had a couple of other friends with Vodafone cable also complain about it.

And yes, I did bring this up a couple of times in the other thread as well. It's unfortunately still not resolved.

If you are switching between DNS servers then one thing to make sure is that you clear the DNS cache or else even with a new DNS server Windows (and other OSs) will most likely keep serving up the same old DNS entry for a while. (See http://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/how-do-i-flush-my-windows-dns-cache/ for details on how to do that)

Sorry to hear about issues with CDN access on Vodafone.
I have not seen this personally and have a few ideas i wanted to share.

The Content/CDN providers are very clever and can use multiple techniques to direct clients to the "nearest" node.

The team at Google in August directed more traffic to there CDN nodes (Google Global Caches) located in ISP's network for common sites including www.google.co.nz and www.google.com
I track common sites and graph path/hop/latency and saw the change for my Vodafone cable connection using the Vodafone DNS.
Youtube has been provided by the CDN nodes in the ISP's and also via Sydney.

I like many these days use a third party DNS to access content.

I also found that if i used third party DNS (Unotelly) my access to Google, Apple, Amazon and major CDN providers like Akamai it was poorer as a result.
It makes sense that i would be directed to a CDN server located in a third party network as it was seen as the "closest" to me but was sadly further away and also slower.

Your descriptions of it "stalling" is apt and must be frustrating.
I even noticed that there was differences between using the Vodafone (exTelstraClear) "Cable" DNS and Vodafone (exIhug) "Mobile" DNS.
I all comes back to the clever techniques the Content/CDN providers use and which servers they direct us towards.

I now use the following on a Raspberry Pi with Dnsmasq for recursive DNS caching:
Unotelly Auckland/Sydney for special content sites
ns1.telstraclear.net -> 203.97.78.43  for all other sites
rdns1.ihug.net -> 203.109.191.1 for all other sites

Lastly dnsmasq (used by most linux/busybox based routers) can query all the applicable DNS for each domain queried and uses the first response.
This is not efficient traffic wise but does speed up DNS so for me is personally worth it.
http://ma.ttwagner.com/make-dns-fly-with-dnsmasq-all-servers/

If anyone's keen i can share some of my DNSmasq configuration.

Google/OpenDNS recursive DNS infrastructure supports providing the content/CDN provider with the subnet the clients ip which is clever.
I look forward to more DNS within ISP's and third parties supporting this to provider faster smarter access.
Here's the site for those interested in asking there ISP's and third party DNS providers.
http://www.afasterinternet.com/

I look forward to seeing what the Vodafone team can do to improve access with these CDN providers that are affected by DNS anomalies.

Sunday 18:15pm and platform.twitter.com is timing out again and yet the tracert seem fine:

Tracing route to platform.twitter.com [104.244.43.140]

4 21 ms 17 ms 17 ms ge-0-2-0-1.xcore1.acld.telstraclear.net [203.98.50.251]
5 21 ms 18 ms 19 ms gi2-20.akl-grafton-bdr1.ihug.net [203.109.130.41]
6 * * * Request timed out.

8 45 ms 42 ms 43 ms 104.244.43.140

I'd say the proxy is causing problems again...

So ... I'm on VF Cable in Wilton/Wellington & have had DNS issues for aaaages. Pretty much since the connection was put on in June, actually. For the most part, these issues seem to have resolved, with the exception of the issue this thread was set up to deal with.

I've the Technicolor all-in-one unit, set up with the VF Cable DNS 43/44 combination recommended. Now ... when these problems raise their head, manually setting a different DNS in nslookup doesn't change a thing, despite the fact that I can ping said DNS.

Hell, tonight nslookup times out trying to do its own reverse IP lookup.

DNS request timed out.

    timeout was 2 seconds.

And Bored Panda could be confused with Very Bored Sloth ...

Spoke too soon. Loads of DNS queries failing now .. things like mail.zoho.com and theage.com.au - it comes & goes, and quite frankly I'm a bit over it.

Sadly we aren't due for UFB here until Jul 16 - Jul 17, but at this rate I would be better off going back to ADSL with Bigpipe - it was certainly more reliable, and no slower at peak times.

Once a long-upon-a-time ago, before the buyout i think, there was talk of a plan to upgrade the telstraclear dns servers as it was recognised they had become a problem (to rival the proxy farm) due to it's flakiness, it was discussed here somewhere.

Unfortunately i seem to recall that plan was dropped before it was started, perhaps now is the time for Vodafome to pick it up again.

Often seeing connections stall for dns here, and yes using official ones (with a couple exceptions)

Hi,

Can you confirm if you are still having issues on the cse.google.co.nz and the other akamai content cdn.resignationmedia.com using the Vodafone Cable DNS?
Is platform.twitter the only remaining site stalling for your case?

Cheers
