Spyware: Certain routers, certainly Dlinks, can't cope with the high levels of ARP traffic on the network. Edimax routers are fine as I have done some experiments after having a problem with a Dlink 804HV and 824VUP+ in Christchurch. There is at least one thread on Geekzone identifying this issue.

That's kinda what I was figuring with the Netgear Router initially and was hoping the D-Link one would be better.  Apparently not.

Does anyone else have a router that is known to work properly?

I have a Belkin which has been up 24/7 for the last four years. I am also using a new brand, review coming soon.

And my linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT has not missed a beat. However there have been micro-outages for me over the last two weeks on the network that would affect you no matter what type of router you are running. When it happens to me I do start to think it's a DNS issue, can ping IP's fine, but the DNS servers using nslookup doesn't respond....

I have recently installed a Checkpoint/Zonealarm Z100G wireless router/firewall that I really like from a security management aspect but which appears to be more sensitive to the problems than my old D-Link although that did have micro-pauses. I have isolated it from my modem by a switch to see if the problem was due to physical ethernet interface problems and found no improvement. The ARP rate explanation seems reasonable and is pretty hard to fix without using specific hardware.

I am using a Dlink 802.11a/b/g router/switch. It has worked fine for the past year. It's only been recently that I have started to get these micro outages. I guess I could try swapping it out but I don't think it would be a router issue.

I suggested a brande on an earlier posts, and I can confirm I don't have micro outages - actually the router I am testing now shows a network uptime of eight days - this one has a special fallback solution that automatically connects to 3G if the network is down (as I said more on a review soon) - so I know this is how long my TCL connection has been up since the last time I rebooted the router (for a configuration change).

My router/switch has been up for more than 8 days - more than 3 months. It's only in the past few weeks I have experienced these probems. Go to a web site - get Not Found, click a few times and finally it is displayed. And it's not site specific so it must be something else. I don't do anything like reboot the router but occasionally have power cycled the modem. Nothing seems to work though.

If I was using my TCL cable at home more I would run sniffer/wireshark all the time and see what was going on.... there doesn't seem to be any consistancy as to when it occurs.  Plus I know it's not a complete outage as my IM/Skype keeps on running.  Just browsing the web I get "Page cannot be displayed" then hit refresh and it's back.  Annoying but not the end of the world.

I've had issues like this that have been related to my router.  Most recently I had problems with my Airport Extreme whereby it was disconnecting the internet up to 5 times a day, the only way to reset it was to reseat the power cable.  I even sent the router away for replacement, and it happened on the new one.  After playing around for a long time I found that I needed to turn of IPv6 on the router, and on my Mac's.  Since then I've had rock solid performance.

I've also experienced this kind of thing when using WPA security on a router (or computer) that doesn't handle WPA very well.  The easiest way to check if this is the problem is change your security to WEP for a few days and see if it happens again.

Lastly, I'm using a mixture of DNS servers, one of Telstra's and one of Xtra's.  I don't seem to get any DNS problems at all.  Any issues with my line getting disconnected have always been to do with my internal hardware, not Telstra themselves.

That said - I've been provisioned incorrectly a couple of times.  Somehow even though I've been on the same plan since the beginning (10Mbps, 40Gb) the provision has reset to lower speeds by itself.  Presumably after a reset of the cable modem.  Aside from that I've been stable.

Seems to be two issues reported here.

My issue is not the router itself, as that does not go down.  I can still access the router itself even during the micro-outages.
The issue appears to be one of the router not playing well with the Cable Modem.
My original Netgear router had this problem from day 1.  The D-Link managed a few months before the problem re-surfaced.

Last night was diabolical for me from at least 9pm to midnight - Internet access was virtually impossible although occaissionally a web page would load or email client manage to connect. - I reset my modem and router multiple times to no effect.

I now have a Linksys WRT54GL to test. It installed in minutes and everything is sweet this morning. I'll see if it makes a difference over the next few days (or nights as it seems worse then).

I have a suspicion that the outage appeared or got much worse after I upgraded my account to 10G/4Mbits. That could be accounted for by a routers inablitiy to deal with the volume of ARP requests as noted elsewhere.

If it doesn't fix the problem I'll put a hub between my modem and router and monitor the traffic during outages to see if the ARPs continue which will point to a router problem, or if they stop which will will point to a modem/network issue.

Well I have noticed one coincidence. Every time I had this micro outage, I can't access the modem (192.168.1.100) but can access my router/switch. I wonder if my modem is causing a problem and will ask TCL for a replacement to see if that changes the situation.

Interesting.  Let us know how that goes.
I suspect they will ping the modem and tell you that it's just fine.  :P

Having tried a Checkpoint/Zonealarm Z100G firewall with no success I am now trialling a Linksys WRT54GL and it seems to have greatly reduced (if not fixed) the problem. No if it only had the configuration and logging options of the Z100G.
