and 250mbps seems more than adequate.

I was waiting foe someone to say this. Sure that is a excellent speed compared to what most get, but that is not what he pays for, not even close, so lets not go down that road shall we.

Until it has been tested on a range of hardware, or that computer doing a test on another gig connection and getting 800+ then its not been proven to be an issue with the internet connection.

I have had a couple of junk laptops with "gigabit" ports which ended up being CPU bound copying files across the network and barely getting 30MB/sec - so I would be looking at the PC more than the ISP at this stage.

As others have pointed out until this has been tested with at least one other device my simple response is that there is no fault.

Ethernet performance differs significantly across PC's, and speedtest.net performance can also differ across PC's and browsers. Basic testing with only a single PC isn't enough to show that there is a problem.

If testing on another device shows similar issues then there could be a problem, but until further testing has been done there is nothing Vodafone (or anybody else) can do you for. As your connection is clearly on a Gigabit profile the issue isn't going to be that.

Things to check:
If your using the HG659 fully reset the device to factory settings.
Can you provide the Laptop model number or if its a PC run DXDIAG and attach a screen shot of the first tab.
When testing use speedtest.net

The OP still hasn't advised how (s)he is testing and to what server(s). Is it to a local, national or international location? Tested using speedtest, single/multiple HTTP connections, FTP etc?

Testing has been done by both me an Vodafone using Ookla and Vodafone did some more technical stuff (trace routs etc...). There are other people on my exchange reporting that they are getting 900mbps from Vodafone, and since fibre doesn't degrade based on distance from the exchange a fair assumption would be that I should be able to achieve that as well. Plus I am getting double up compared to what I am getting down indicates there is a problem.

I have seen other people perform the same speed tests on their Gigabit Fibre on less powerful machine (the PC I am using is a modern i3 with 4 gigs of ram) and they achieve 900 mbps so it is possible to do this sort of testing on a standard single home PC.

I should add, that when I do the test anything else that is using the fibre connection drops out, indicating that the sped test is saturating network and using all the available bandwidth.

The router I am using is supplied by Vodafone which is rated to well over 900mbps. They have swapped this out to ensure it wasn't the router. I have tested with nothing else connetd and the laptop connected directly to the router - I have also tried different cables.

I'll try borrowing a laptop and see what I get, but it does seem clear there is a problem - in fact, all 4 techs that rang and looked at it thought there was a problem but they just weren't sure what it was. The Gigatown roll out is being used by Chorus as a showcase and they have thrown everything behind it - I'm sure they aren't really supply speeds in the 200 mbps range as an acceptable showcase for what should be 1gbps. We are seeing aproximately 20 percents of the speed we should be getting.

A core i3 with 4gb of ram actually isnt that powerful - it is on the same scale in terms of power of my Chromebook which does have a lighter weight OS. Try a better laptop.

Also, since some speed test servers are only on gigabit connections themselves it is not a good guide on what you can get on your connection.

I have seen other people get 900mbps on the Ookla speed test servers and it's what Vodafone use for their official testing. I really don't think it's the laptop as it is handling almost 500 up, but I will try another to eliminate it.

Best to try another PC. Lower spec computers like said earlier in the thread can be the cause of the issue.

Good info thanks, Vodafone provided another router with mirrored results. Interesting how it drops other connections out. If you stream 1080P twitch.tv on one device and then speedtest on the other and twitch cuts out it would probably mean your connection is maxed the the issue lies elsewhere. (Tech goes around and "Cleans" the fibre)

(not a 100% accurate test but surely can help)

We actually have Vodafone TV boxes (don't do it, they are terrible and we are getting them removed on Monday) and if I do the speed test with them on the TV drops out meaning the connection is saturated - which points to yet another problem they refuse to acknowledge. The Vodafone TV is supposed to be on a parallel fibre connection. If this is true, then doing a speed test would have no impact on it.

We have tried disconnecting the boxes and only get a tiny increase.

I was wondering if chorus had provisioned our main fibre accidentally into the Vodafone TV fibre channel.
