It's the exact same article from the AFR. TPG are running out of telcos to buy in Australia. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they bought Vodafone (AU and/or NZ).

IMHO Vodafone would never just sell one or the other as it would leave them with a single interest. If they wanted to sell, they'd want to get rid of both.

I think VF NZ+Aus would probably add about 7 million customers to any portfolio (I would guess the ARPU would be around A$50). However, I don't think that Vodafone group would be likely to let that number of customers drop out of its network. Given its strategy around mobile 4G and Broadband.

TPG I understand is an MVNO like 2 degrees so there would be some form of synergy there.

That's not a label I'd attach to 2degrees; they do roam on Vodafone, but have a significant number of their own cell sites.

I'd also like to know how you can call 2 degrees a MVNO. You could call warehouse mobile a MVNO using the 2 degrees network.

I figure when Vodafone bought Telstra Clear it created enough problems (non-integrated systems 4 years on, anyone?). Any operator that would want to purchase Vodafone better have an awfully big wallet and be prepared for major headaches around fixing customer service, because - honestly - the customer service they provide via their non-helpful foreign call centre is utterly useless. That's the kind of issue I'd like to see any potential purchaser tackle head-on, not just say "oh, everything will be business as usual" because "business as usual" sure ain't working for them right now.

Not only vfone. Have you read all the comments on the spark facebook site lately, have a read of the comments on the slingshot, orcon, facebook sites also.

Don't expect TPG to do that. Pipe Networks, AAPT, iiNet, and Internode all still run separately from the point of view of the customer.

I think there would have to be some sort of integration to obtain benefits from the acquisition. In exactly the same way as the often talked about Telstra / Spark merger. Perhaps the wholesale transfer of functions like marketing etc from NZ to Australia.

For me the interesting question is what impact would it have on roaming arrangements. For example, would we see a new Trans-Tasman telco removing roaming rates across the Tasman as a point of difference but needing to raise them in other parts of the would due to loss of scale.

I've no doubt there must be a number of insiders reading this thread and smiling smugly!
